Harsh Reality Pics - The Black Museum

an old photo I found while looking at photos. Mate brought a new S1 Jota [my influence] from TT Motors in Berkerley CA with the intention of
riding it around Europe and the Isle of Man. He dropped that valve on his way to Vancouver to catch a flight to London. The head was fixed pretty quick by TT Motors and he had to make a non stop dash to Vancouver to male the flight. Don't think the bike gave him any more troubles while touring Europe. Judging from the piston it wasn't jota spec being a US model.

Famous case involving a London Guzzi dealership that used bulk oil that was wrongly labelled- I believe two bikes were serviced and rode away with engine full of hydraulic oil- and both seized. No fluff was discovered..
that's what took one of the Concordes out ... wrong sh*t in the hydraulic system and impossible to flush!

As promised Clem, a couple of photos of the dreaded fluff with a few metal particles thrown in for free😀. This stuff was almost completely covering the filter mesh so not much oil getting to the engine’s top end. Didn’t pull the motor down but you can assume that the bottom end suffered as well.

You sure that's fluff and not gunge?

Paul

Definitely fluff, not grunge.pic’s don’t really show it to well .Certainly don’t think that it’s clutch fibre either.

I've never found fluff in an engine Tom, except when there were remains of a rag in the gearbox... obviously forgotten before last buttoning up. Thankfully, it was too large to slip through the gearbox/crank passage, it would have strangled oil supply immediately should it have reached the strainer.

I once forgot paper shop towels in the intake ports of a 888 Ducati, rained confetti when it eventually fired!

Just another Mystery, unless someone can capture some of it and do Spectral analysis. We might discover a new form of life.

I have seen it three times Piet, twice on 120's and both of them Jota 120's, Ray Sheepwash and Paul Mullholland (finer strainer) and once on a 1200, (courser strainer) my own, I knew what the fresh oil was but I could not recall what the old stuff was (*), and I would not have found it if I hadn't (err) dropped something, could have been a proper disaster as the next trip was Denmark and back, almost non stop.
CLEM

* I have never stuck to the same oil, just always 20-50 and automotive diesel type, or air cooled petrol type.

I sold a dismantled Jota 120 to Maurice Turner years ago, the oil cooler was full of strange 'fluff' which he only found when he realised the oil wasn't circulating properly on start up. Weird.

Always rinse out the oil cooler on rebuild. Engines are expensive.
