Laverda 500 shifter

Hi all!
Long time I didn’t log in here! I have been very busy at work and privately… but I managed to finish my last Laverda project!
After struggling to find all parts I did manage to find them all and even to rebuild the head completely😎
I’ll try to post some photos in the end of the post.
Anyway, I have a problem with the shifting, i thought I had set it correctly meassuring both sides as per workshop manual, and in the first ride when downshifting from 3rd-2nd-1st gear, I had to lift a bit the shifter before selecting lower gear.
So I reopen the side cover and readjust the excentric bolt until I am satisfied shifting manually, making sure that the spring moves back the selector to neutral position and makes the “click”.
Well, I reassemble everything, go for a ride… and surprise, same thing as before!! So clearly I didn’t adjust it correctly once again…
Any ideas or suggestions before I start for a second time? I wouldn’t like to have to open it a a third time😕
By the way, it runs super nicely!! Ignitech ignition, new pistons, rebuilt head, monty exhaust… and sound incredible!

Thanks and regards!
Miguel

Hi Miguel,
sorry, cannot help you with the shifter but congratulations for the perfect work.
If you need a new project, I add a link

regards
Andre

Thank you… actually that bike is on my island… but it is way too “frankestein”, and I still have a Laverda 1200 to restore, i think that will be the last one…

It might be unrelated to your gear selection issue but to me the gear change linkage is ‘upside down’. Is it personal preference the reason why you have it set it up the way it is?

Hi!
I changed the fork springs as recommended from Wolfang, some manufacture from Germany… problem solved. I compared the frame with another frame I had and had the exact same distances so I guess it was not bended.

Good point… I tried several options.. can’t recall why I put them upwards, but as I have to diassembke everything once again I will definitively check it the way you say, makes more sense.

And no, I don’t think it affects the shifter. I am thinking to put the excentric pointing upwards, so that the bolt is closer to the spring axis for the same selector position, maybe then the spring actuates more on the shifter, I have the feeling that now the spring is not bringing the shifter strong enough to neutral position… don’t know if it is understandable…🫣

I just found some photos of the shifting before disassembling… maybe it helps to give me some inputs. May be I will just try the exact same position as from the photos!😅

Good luck with the shift adjustment Miguel. Shame it is more complicated to open than the 750s and triples. I reckon you’ll get it sorted. Make sure the spring can’t block the travel of the selector arm.
Fantastic colour!

Nice looking bike. The Stradas look a little out of place. Not a criticism just an observation!

Cheers,

bazzee

Stradas were a fitment on the 500, but I do agree the red does rather clash. However, it’s not a matter of whether it is right or wrong, after all they came red, it’s just, as you say, a matter of opinion.

I completely overhauled them, and decided intentionally to paint them red, with Cerakote. I like them, and they are creating the effect I expected! you are talking about them!!🤣🤣
I really like the color combination but of course that is something personal...

BTW, I have fixed the shifter, there were 2 problems:

- the bolt was not perfectly adjusted and that the nut of the double disc selector was loose didn't help I guess.
- I realized that when torquing the 10 Allen screws of the side case, the shifter was getting tight and was not twisting freely, so the spring was not strong enough to bring the pedal back to neutral to be ready for the next shifting. there is a washer between the axel and the case, probably to make the movement smoother and to avoid the axel to spin touching the case, I just change it and put a thinner one, and boualá! probably the new gasket was a bit thinner than the factory one.
- now is shifting perfectly!

Now I can say the bike is ready and I can go for a joy ride... with ear plugs, because is f... loud!!

Good work Miguel. Whenever I fit a selector cover I check with no gasket first and measure the gap - it then makes it very simple to ascertain whether the shaft will bind once the cover is fitted.

Probably a rivet pin roller to change too.
Does anyone know if this part is available somewhere like for the 750. Maybe it’s the same.
