TT1 4 Hour Endurance racing

Great read Andy, true grit thats what they call that (y) (y)
John Wayne would have been proud.:)
As said ,with all those obstacles gone, racing should be a breeze:)

Bloody hell! What a horrendous journey to the track. So glad to read that you did make it and I also reckon things will go smoothly from now on. Car trouble .... gotta hate it!

The local mobile Radialtor bloke just rang me, he will be here in 10 minutes, Hard to believe I am losing coolant in my Mazda Tribute.

Practice not going well, bike mis-firing and cutting out. neither of us have completed a session.
So far fuel lines swapped, removing inline filters, but no good so now ditched the lithium battery for a standard one in case it is affecting the ignition. Will find out in first qualifying session in a couple of hours.

just retired a Lithium battery from one of our race bikes as it would just go open circuit for no reason at all and then come back online, so engine would start banging and carrying on
Took me awhile to work it out but then it started to do it in the workshop, fire bike up, all good and then engine would just cut out for no reason
Changed out battery, no more issue

Good luck guys

First qualifying over. I managed 3 laps before the bike started misbehaving again, sounded like a fire cracker going off. However, had improved my lap time by a large amount in just that short period, so starting to get a feel for the circuit. should be able to go much quicker if we can sort the bike and I can get a few laps in.
Andy B went out having spaced the ignition cover out a bit in case it was overheating. Not a completely clear run, including a lurid slide near the end of one lap, but he got to the end of the session and completed 6 laps. 😃
Next qualifying session is at 8pm followed by a ‘night time’ session at 9.30pm, although it won’t be very dark!
I think at the moment we are just scraping in by the skin of our teeth.

Is the misfire directed to any one cylinder only, or all three?

I'm thinking of the misfire on my RGS en route to Breganze in 2019 - that was across all three cylinders, so had to be electrical and 'common' - I checked ignition switch and wiring, optical eye (DMC2 ignition), all relevant live and earth connections - could I f*ck as find it - turned out to be the sub-loom for the DMC2 box (i.e. the plug on the box, specifically the live feed) - wire had degraded over time - nothing visually wrong, but that was the fault.

Just trying to help from afar by offering potential diagnosis - but in reality there's more than enough brains, knowledge and experience amongst those present to work it our far better than me sat at a keyboard in the UK......

Good luck fellas - keep your chins up and the grins wide open! :D

Alan :)

Thanks guys for all the comments, suggestions and support so far.
We have managed to get through both qualifying sessions and the night practices, and all though we have both experienced some further misfiring, me more than Andy B, it hasn’t stopped either of us from remaining positive for the race tomorrow.
Riding with the sun going down on an unfamiliar circuit, that’s tricky enough to learn/ride, was an interesting experience. I think both of us thought we couldn’t have found it more challenging than if we were riding blindfolded!
How some of the old hands at racing this circuit in these conditions so effing fast still manage to do it, I don’t know. However, there were a couple that I think binned it.
Whatever, I’m sure by tomorrow evening it will cloud over a bit (fat chance I guess) and the race will be a walk in the park.

The worst misfire I ever had was a part broken ignition earth wire, the damaged bit was 50mm up the wire from the battery under the insulation and completely hidden, the blokes after a day and a half of nightmare running temporarily made a replacement feed and earth loom to the EI and I rode it the 400ks home with it going way better. It was at first tumbling the popping but by the end, it was virtually unrideable going for 5minutes and then suddenly stopping and going with huge backfires. Good luck with the fix. It's always THE BLOODY EARTH CONNECTION.

Hey Andy just a thought check if your ignition rotor is picking up the triggers on the ignition card, ie is the rotor in the correct lateral position on the crank, I have seen that here in particular when the engine is at operating temp and the rotor may only be a bees dick in or out on the length of the crank, can be hard to see but gives the same symptoms.
