Palmelli SFC

Come on help me out, so is it 180 or 360 in original SFC the Palmelli 270 was an extra cost option standard 360 had a normal SF engine 270 was available in different stages of tune
Any Laverda cranks in 270° configuration are either factory experimental (very doubtfull!) or privately individually modified. All 750 Breganze cranks left the factory gates in 360° configuration.

My works '73 750SFC engine shows signs of experiments with 180° crank phasing, the originally fitted Dansi ignition baseplate had provision for 2 pick-ups placed at 180°. No evidence though of this ever coming to fruitition.

The 500/600 has 180° crank phasing, as do all Zane models, these are all based on the 500 bottom end.

The last version made cast wheels & electronic ignition there were only 33 originals made only 6 came to the UK and Palmelli made 3 replicas

Electronica refers to the special last SFC engines with unique castings, a specific crank and a Bosch electronic ignition. Not an SF engine with electronic ignition which is what is fitted to the Palmelli.

All this about different crank configurations and firing orders reminds me of a story ( probably not true ) ............

It was about a kid who was told that by removing some material from the disc of his disc valve two stroke , it would improve the engines performance .

He was seen later working on his bike`s engine , and was asked what he was doing ............

He replied ......... " I`m removing that disc completely ....... the bike should really fly now .... " ..........

Ok I’m learning more by the day lol ! Thanks for that , do you exactly what was unique about the casting as mine does have the cut outs on the right hand side

The main differences of the SFC engines are internal, some small, some huge... anybody can make a >74 SFC external look-a-like from a stock engine, the post-74s require a little more effort and cash. Still don't attain true SFC specs in most cases. Just because the sprocket cover has been chopped up doesn't mean it is a SFC part, takes about hour to modify a stock cover neatly, 10 minutes if you're not overly concerned about aesthetics. ;)

The post-72 SFCs thrive from their lightened crank, it's what makes these beasts truely come alive. Add a close-ratio gearbox and all the little odds and sods required to keep them going for hours on end under racing conditions and you end up miles from a stock SF engine.

A friend compared the parts lists of a 74 SF and a 74 SFC. There are over 500 different references.
You can add quite a few more with an Electronica engine.

Spoke to a guy at Brands Hatch, today, who had a Palmelli "SFC", built by Slater Bros., he thought.
Also a CICO 1200 "Jota" and a Jota, he asked me what they were worth.
"As much as someone is prepared to pay for them."

What he probably would have liked to hear was ........ 30 grand for the Palmelli ; 20 grand for the Cico ....... and 15 grand for the Jota ..........

In reality it would be about 8 or 10 grand for the Jota ........... and sod all for the Palmelli and Cico because , unlike the Jota , no bugger has ever heard of them ............. ( Only joking , sort of ....... but you see what I`m getting at .... ) ........

My local back street motorcycle shop owner ( Stan ) told be a while ago that some bloke he knew was busy collecting Buells , because he was convinced they would be an investment and worth loads in a few years time ......

Used ones are going for the price of a Chinese scooter at the moment if you`re interested .........

Although new ones are available again at £25,000 ......... Investment opportunity going begging for sure ............
