1973 3C crankcase mods, advice needed.

This is a very early bike 1304 which has seen some modifications in the distant past. One of them was the fitting of an oil cooler and it's a plug ugly set up that I want to remove. I'm not sure but I think someone has drilled down vertically from the cylinder base into an existing oil gallery on each side of the motor and then drilled horizontally into the channel they created and then welded on a horrible union to connect the hose from the cooler.
I will be using a skilled welder to try and sort this out and make a decent repair but am I being realistic? Any ideas?

That steel ball is blocking the original feed from the oil pump. You could open that and block the horizontal drilling. An expert will correct me if need be.
The cases have been drilled in the primary compartment to feed the clutch, that's the two smaller holes. The sole original hole is the big one 5cm up from the bottom. That's at least part of my clutch problem.
Now, I'll drill the cases since I have access.

Yes I noticed the extra drilled holes as soon as I took the cover off. I'm not familiar with the oilways and what goes where inside the castings. By the way the clutch was fine, not stuck, but I had to hammer a piston out of its bore.
 
So let me get this straight, the vertical oil hole beneath the barrels was already there on the early bikes and someone has blocked it off with a ball bearing or something?
 
Here's the cylinder base gallery...

Note the gallery is connected to only 6 of the cylinder studs, oil is fed up the bores directly to the cam bearings before it splashes out to the cams and tappets.

Looks like they punched a couple of extra holes into the primary wall as well.
It's had a lot of mods Chris but some of it is surprisingly good. I bought it from Caustic Chris, he told me the head was suspect but it was a great motor, Jota pistons (now scrap), Axtell cams, IIS ignition. I think he sold the Axtell cams separately. The frame has had the seat rails and battery tray lowered and various lugs and brackets removed, mostly aft of the engine. JotaJoe very kindly cut off the rear section of his scrap 1200 frame and brought it from Ireland on one of his trips so I can cannibalise that for most items. Top bloke.
 
to make Piets post a little clearer by "bores" he means the stud holes, on the non coler types the oil is fed from the oil pump direct to the cylinder base gallerry, which is flooded, oil rises up the six outer stud holes and into the cam bearings where it literally sprays eveywhere draining by gravity through various routes includeing a drilling in every tappets bore, oil is also fed direct from the cyinder base gallerry into two seperate drilling which directly feed the centre mains, those two drilling are also staright and need a clean with cotton buds from time to time.the outer main bearings and the pistons are splash fed, nice and reliable and plenty of it sloshing around everywhere. Just grind off the addedd crap and all will be revealed, I dont think this will be hard to bring back to as was, the holes that you will need to fill will be quite small. The two extra holes in the primary case are no bad thing and to get the same effect was stock on later models, although not looking the same as yours, BUT>>>>>>>is that a crack I see leading to the gearbox mainshaft bearing????? and I seriously dont like the look of the red Hermetite, oozing out, on rebuilding use Loctite flange sealant (cant remember the number) piss thin, works very well, only hardens when air removed, so any excess does not set and is washed away, there shouldnt be any to start with though. Chassis number and rear shock mounts make me think it just might be a very, very, late drum braker??????? special order??? 304, surely not, cant be arsed to look in records.

He didnt muck around with that extended clutch lever slot either. Does the seat subframe usually drop down like that, the Chopper blokes used to do that to get a lower seat hight.

Hello Clem, it isn't a crack it's a raised piece in the casting but I'll have another look just to make sure.
I have a lot of paperwork for the bike including the Italian registration documents with all the previous owners. It was sold in Torino in December 1973, the homologation number is for a drum brake model but whether it was supplied with a front drum brake I have no idea. It had 38mm Cerianis on it when I bought it.

So help me understand this, if the hole in the top of the crankcase has been blocked with a ball bearing or something to divert oil to the cooler how did oil get into the gallery under the barrels?
