Dear Braintrust,

I just purchased a 1974 1000 3C. It’s in need of restoration. But, I noticed something different about this bike. The redline is shown as 8000 rpm. I havent seen one with this high of a redline. Is there something unique to this year? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Chris

Possibly an aftermarket ND Honda clock......?

Agree, no Laverda emblem, need a front on photo, would most probable have "ND" on lower tacho dial face... rev the 3C to 8 grand it will let you know if ok or not.... yes poor joke, cannot recall ever hitting the 8250 rev limiter on my 3C's no need really...HTH j.

Unfortunately, I’m not home to get a better photo. When I get back, I will check again. But, thanks for replies.

I’ll bet you are correct. It is a very early bike. And it does have the 200 mm Bosch headlight. Unfortunately, I’m in Japan for work. Won’t be home a 2 weeks. I’ll try to get the number on the bike. Thanks for the help all.

It is well nown that THE STOCK ND rev counter did many times have the red line incorectly printed, some even had the "gen" light labelled as "oil" I have no idea why the red line was incorrect, 8,000 is actually more realistsic than the 6500 normally seen.

Those instruments were made for Laverda, (so they should have been bang on) they have differnt internal ratios to the Honda ones and were ordered through Bosch in Germany, who at that time held the ND franchise for mainland Europe.

Thanks Clem, it’s an interesting mystery to me. I am going to try and track down the original owner and see where that may lead too. Thanks for your help.

Well it says Laverda on the clock. The bike only has 2600 miles. So, not sure of this.
The photo is clear enough to see that it has a Laverda logo on the speedo, but not the tacho.

It looks like a Honda tacho to me.
Identifiers: No logo, full red sector from the centre of the tach between 8000 and 9300, and no idiot lights.

Cam (Dellortoman) appears to be spot on. Note if it's a complete Honda tach it would be the incorrect gearing, 3:1 vs 4:1 or something like that.

It could also be that some pedantic previous owner has been annoyed by the unrealistically low redline and rebuilt the original Laverda tach of the correct gearing with a Honda face that showed a more sensible redline. Weird, but possible. Mind you, then he would have been annoyed by the lack of a neutral light...

The correct faces for a 3C are with a Laverda logo as per your speedo, and the 6500rpm redline. You can buy reproduction faces here:
