1974 Laverda 1000 3C

Hi, My name is John and I am pleased to be accepted to the Laverda Forum. I have ridden and owned motorcycles since 1971. About a year ago I purchased a 1974 Laverda 1000 3C. I bought it from the widow of the previous owner and was told it ran fine. When I received the bike, it made a clunking noise coming from under the Left side cover. Upon pulling the Left sidecover, I believe the problem is that the primary chain connecting the transmission to the engine is too loose . I tried tightening the tensioner underneath the bottom of the case (which appears to be new) and the noise is less but still seems abnormally loud. I have no experience with Italian Motorcycles although I have a few. Can someone give me insight into this problem. Is it possible my chain is worn out? Can a replacement chain be purchased? I would be very grateful to anyone who would share their knowledge with me. Thank You John Windham 386-984-8603 or respond here

Welcome to the forum.
First and easiest things to check are the interface between the primary crank sprocket and its spline and the clutch cush drive rubbers. Both are resolvable, the cush drive a simple remove old and fit new (there are threads in the archives to explain the process), the crank splines can be sorted by fitting thin metal sheaves to eliminate play and tightening VERY tight - again, there will be advice in the archives if you search.

If the mileage of the chain is unknown, replace it. Chains are cheaper than crankcases! The primary chains were specified for replacement at 25000km by the factory.

Other sources of clunking/clashing noises are worn clutch drums and hubs, knackered primary cush drive rubbers or loose crank sprockets, all, unfortunately, very common.

Laverda triples are generally hi-mileage bikes and many did not recieve the TLC that they demand.

Wow, Thank you to everyone who replied. I will let everyone know how it turns out. It may be a few weeks before I reply as my sons build and race dirt cars and they will help me with this matter. One more question, Is there a source for replacement parts when I need them? I want those who responded to know that their knowledge is very much appreciated. Best Regards John

There are a few sources for parts, diminishing in number with time.

Wolfgang Haerter Columbia Car and Cycle is in BC Canada....relatively close to Florida. Not sure there are any Forum members in your neck of the woods who could help with a look see. There use to be a bike shop in Daytona Beach that usually had a few Laverdas but I think they are no longer into that era of bikes. As others have said with the Forum for advice and reasonable mechanical skills you should be able to sort this issue out.

Remove your primary cover slacken the adjuster bolt before doing so, there are a number of mechanical possibilities that could be creating your noise, the one you should look for is that sprocket that bolts onto the crankshaft, the Jesus nut referred to earlier is the nut that secures the sprocket to the crankshaft, there should be a lock washer behind it and it needs to be very very tight, if it comes loose it can wear the splines on the crankshaft.
Good luck.

Hi This is John again . I previously got some great advice on my 1974 Laverda 3C. I am having consistent trouble sending an email to Wolfgang Haerter at Columbia cycles in Canada. I am in need of Laverda parts such as a primary chain, a Chain tensioner and Cush rubbers. If anyone can lead me in the right direction to obtain these parts, I would greatly appreciate the help, Thank You John

Wolfgang is still probably your best bet in your part of the world, for knowledge as well as stock.
I bought my primary chain etc from Red in Queensland, you can PM him through his forum name 'redax5'. If you think Europe might be cheaper for freight you could PM 'sfcpiet' who posted on this thread earlier. Like Wolfgang, both are well known as reputable suppliers.
There are other excellent suppliers too of course, but these are just the two I've dealt with most recently.

This reminds me of an Aussie bloke on this forum that lived in Florida. Had a Jota he imported to Florida from the UK. For the life of me, I cannot recall his name. Haven't seen him post in a long time. McNicoll?
