750 Zane starter ratios and stuff

Hi all, I know this will be a boring subject but I need as much info as possible. I am getting my 750 ready and it’s suffering from the usual clunky slow stalling starting.
I have already changed the starter to a four brush, increased the cable sizes and connected more directly with a better battery upgrade fully charged.
Now I read that we can change the the starter gear ratios, how is this possible? Where can I get the parts for this?
Also, the sprag, where can I get a new one, is there one that comes from another manufacturer that actually fits and works, any info on the above of your experiences here would be a great help on getting the old bike on the road for that elusive day when the weather smiles upon us!!

Special starter gear sets were available only for a short time, out of Italy, about 6-7 years ago. Reckon those supplies have long dried up...

Thanks Piet, let’s hope we can find some sets on the loose, or if someone can get the manufacturers details I can approach

One of our UK guys just had his motor rebuilt by a Denso specialist for £40 including replacing the springs on the brushes - i have seen it start now - very impressed - I have been lucky mine is a quick starter 2-3 seconds

From my records - note: not my personal experience and not verified.

" KTM LC4 640 uses the exact same starter clutch. I can confirm they are interchangeable as I just put a spare one from my Ghost Strike into the KTM and it works a treat. KTM part no. 58440026000."

Also (apparently) contemporary Ducrappis, including 996, 750s, 600ss, Monster 600. Again, info NOT verified by me.

That’s great, thanks!! I’m on the track of a special gear set for the starter as well, so hopefully will be springing into life at the touch of a button shortly.
I have a Hawker Battery, anyone got experience of better battery, or is that as good as it gets?

I use this:
51913 BMW Westco Motorcycle Battery 12V 20Ah (12V20P). Bought from Tayna.

Last time I looked, it was rated at more CCA than the Odyssey - 275 vs. 225. But these things change, so worth checking. It measures 178 x 75 x 165, same size as the original.

Lothar uses/has used a lithium battery, a Landport ML LFM 14. But check with him.

I’ve ordered one from 3cmoto, just have to twiddle my thumbs till it gets here I suppose
You mean the starter gear, Kenny? If so, can you please post some pictures and a little write-up, as and when it arrives. I've always understood - from Piet - that a little machining is required to the alternator cover. And 'A picture is worth a thousand words'.

Correct.

It is not much machining, I think just at the top of the alternator cover, you need to make some space for the bigger gear. Just some mm, well possible to do with a Dremel kind of device I was told. I let OCT do it as I did not have the according pullers to get the old one off.

In hand fuel and battery, before I get started on the old fuel draining, as I’ve not looked yet, is there an easy way to drain it, as the access is limited by the looks to the tank bottom or even to symphony.

I have stripped the guts out of a pair of formula carbon exhausts, re packed with proper packing and perforated tube, so it’s straight through now, Alto supplied a new chip to suit, I’m looking forward to hearing the effect when it eventually bursts into life, if it bursts into life,..... of course it will!!!
