Indicators were made mandatory in Germany sometime around 1961, as such a TÜV fail if not fitted or working for bikes post-61. That's why one sees all sorts of imported bikes from countries that did not mandate indicators with those silly bar-end indicators from Hella (OE on many domestic bikes for quite some time). Hugely popular, despite being the first thing to be wiped out in the event of even a minor spill. Well-engineered (for what they are...), these are now stupid expensive! There are lots of far-east imitations available that are worth less than the box they come in. Pretty good sturdy and unobtrusive alternatives from Motogadget, Rizoma et al.
I try to avoid heavy traffic as much as I can with my '60 Matchless due to it not having indicators, always a pretty tense moment hand-signalling with some impatient smartarse breathing down my neck. I've seriously looked into fitting the Motogadget variety, but simply cannot find a decent switch that fits the period.
Reckon there are worse things that can be done to bikes than fitting indicators.
The Chott front indicator bracket is actually a factory part I once found in an original Breganze plastic bag with # tag! It doesn't appear in the parts book.
