2020 Brass Monkey run, 13/14 June
The run is traditionally run on the last weekend in may, but due to the extraordinary situation of a global pandemic, and the lifting of travel restrictions, a last minute decision was made to make the run a couple of weeks late.
In the past the destination has been Uralla, but lately, being that we are all getting longer in the tooth, and that last hour in the cold and dark from Walcha to Uralla, aided by the finding of an excellent place to stay in Walcha, a shorter route was organised.
Saturday morning was cloudy and very foggy, and what was supposed to be an early getaway from Brooklyn ended up being a late getaway. Welcome to Club Laverda NSW! Running up the Old Road to Gosford was a clear run, roads drying, some great corners to get in the mood. The Jota was urging me on. We hit the freeway for the long boring stretch to a brekky stop at Bulladelah. Well that didn't go to plan either!
The calculated distance from Berowa servo to Bulladelah was 202km. My Jota took on 14.9 litres for that journey, 2 other bikes ran out of fuel within 4 km of the town. Hmmm, do we need shorter stops?
Eventually we made it to the Wooton Way, the road was dry and in excellent condition, what a hoot! Back on the freeway, and the decision was made to run straight up to Wauchope for fuel, and then hit the Oxley.
What a top road, great corner after great corner! The tight slower sections slowly give way to the long sweepers and high speed straights. With the speeds slowly rising, soon we where flying along at the ton, hoping not to meet any of the local constabulary. With Walcha in our sights, we pulled into the pub to catch up with the other visitors.
We had successfully dodged the rain all day saturday, but a rain front was on its way. We decided to wait out the rain, and by the time we had second coffees, the rain had passed. The top part of Thunderbolts Way was wet, but by the time we got to the lookout, the road had dried out. With the weather looking good, the decision was made over an excellent burger in Gloucester to head over to Singleton, then onto the Putty road. The road through Dungog and East Gresford is the worst in NSW, pothole on top of pothole, but we managed to get to Singleton in one piece. All that was left was to attack the full length of the Putty rd. Awesome!
Looking forward to our next weekend away.
Cheers
