Atlas Questions

I am hoping to acquire some Atlas hard copy documents, I have a couple of PDFs thanks to people here, but before that arrives I have a question re-oil changes. I just had a look and there does not appear to be a separate oil drain plug. There is a square plate 50 x 50 approx, is this similar to the 750 system with a mesh screen and that's where you drain the oil? What's the sealing arrangement with this plate and can you swap it for the 750 plates with a drain hole plug in the middle of the plate? Be good if you can and also add a magnetic plug as well. BTW oil capacity, 3 litres?

BTW the last time I went looking for an unknown oil drain plug was on a T140v Bonnie and that ended up being the gearbox detent plunger and spring, I ask now after that Fuck up.

Vince,

Oil is dropped via the plate. The plate incorporates a guide for the timing chain, not much room for a large drain plug. A small one with maybe 1/4" NTP thread (Harley-D) can be installed. Plate sealing is by o-ring, so no great hassle removing and refitting. Good idea to take a peek inside with every oil change, ie, see what sort of debris has accumulated at the crankcase floor!

Later 650/668/750 Zane engines have the same plate without the guide, but with a big plug. Reckon the guide isn't THAT necessary...

Had to pull the plastic bash plate to look for an oil drain, I now know why someone asked if anyone had found and fitted an alloy one. Its a bit of a waste of space, so flimsy it needs a rubber standoff on the right side to stop it from wiggling on bumps. I will make some inquires to the local baseplate makers and see if I can adapt one from another model.

Last question from me today, the bike has Malcome's Mark 3 exhaust and I am missing I think 2 standoffs to separate the muffler from the left side plastic side cover, they appear to mount on the back of those side covers. Does anyone have these bits or know what they look like or what they're made from? I know you can get a stick-on woven heat shield that glues on the plastic side covers so will get some of that as well.

Vince, I have billet CNC 500 sump plates in stock, with magnetic sump plugs
Am certain the Laverda factory never redesigned the 500 engine sump plate when changing to the Atlas engine but having never seen an Atlas not 100% certain
But Piet will confirm if I am wrong, he knows everything

Sent you a couple of emails Red, and one bounced. Can you send me your Bank details etc. vstokes@bigpond DOT com

I presume you fit the old gauze oil strainer over the top and it's held in place by a screw/nut in the top of the upright rod on the filter plate?

No point in me replying. I haven't cracked that plate yet so no idea. It so much fun learning a new bike, it's been years for me since that happened.

Piet, I have the alloy rear luggage plate and it has a couple of hollow dowels the holes are 6mm dia and these dowels are on the 2 subframes that the rack plate bolts to on each side front and rear and look to mount side outrigger bars, I have seen them on other Atlas pics. They look to be great lifting points, how you lift a 200kg dirtbike I don't know but they would be handy to hold out soft panniers. Do you have these bars in stock, plus I need a spare clutch cable as well? I saw these a year ago and want them as replacement blinkers.

I had a long look at the exploded diagram and couldn't see anything, so I will probably need to make it. I do need that rubber trumpet that comes out of the top of the airbox so the air intake is as high as possible, mine is split. That and a clutch cable if there available Piet. I will have to take a drive up to Unifuilter and get some proper oiled air filter material. It had an air filter like a sheet of tissue paper, that's not going to cut it on any dirt roads here.

Quite sure NOS clutch cables are in stock, can check next week. Please send me a PM with a list of your needs. Maybe a pic of the rack part?
