Australian Historic Racing Period 4 Triple

My 3C ran in forgotten era which from memory is period 4. 1973 -1983. I was up against the t rex methanol Honda's. Well, not really in the race. They where a lap ahead of me after 5 laps of Oran Park. Heaps of fun though. I used to dice with a guy on a 650 pantah at the back of the pack.

Thanks Marty. That is period 5 Although methanol isn’t allowed in P5 so maybe it was. It would have been hard to get near the Trex bikes as you said. Period 4 is pre 73.

Some T-Rex Hondas must race P4 because Batto's 917SFC beat 'em and won the championship. You could look into the earliest the factory put a triple on a race track - 1st gen calipers (eg, Grimeca, P Lockheed), 35mm forks and a drum rear might get you in?

Drum front and no oil cooler. It's easy to see why Red does Bears, why more interesting Technically.

correct, in BEARs I can modify my bikes as much as I wish to, or as much as Redax can afford to spend on them
am allowed to run carbon front brake rotors if I wished to as an example but man, they are super expensive

TRex bikes are PCRA Period 5, as was Crispin's Space frame but I fail to see the attraction in racing in that class when the TRex bikes are going through an engine every race meeting at $25k +/- per engine rebuild and laying down something like 180hp rear wheel
Difficult to compete at that level with an old Laverda clunker

My aim is to lower the BEARs Formula 4 track record at every track we race at to a point where the Laverda name will remain in the BEARs record books for many years to come, then I will retire them
We already have the track record at every track we race at but looking at going faster yet

Richard already giving me a hard time wanting to know when he can take possession of Veloce in road trim :D:eek:
Couple of years left yet

That’s my thinking too. The rules state you can use tech from the given period, so disk brakes were used before 73, so fine to get log booked. 08 Brembo calibres are accepted too.

The 1200 in my avatar was built for NZ pre82 class. Could have gone 17in wheels but kept the 08's. Biggest hurdle to competing with the big Suzukis etc IMO is having to retain the Dellortos. Yes, could go bigger but can't use downdraft FCR's or Mikuni RS's. Without bigger/better carbs there's no way to make enough power to be competitive. Then of course you've got gearbox problems - 1 broken mainshaft - and it's extremely hard to move the chain line out using the standard frame. He hasn't brought it out for a while but it ran in the front half of the field on circuits which didn't really suit it.

Greg, we’re CR keihins allowed as they are round slides and seem to be hanging off the back of a lot of very fast jap fours in classic racing?
Tom

T-Rexes come as CBR1100RRs, which I'm guessing is P5, and as Period 4 post-classics, which are all K1-based (1972). So I think Red could put his Mule engine in a 'replica' frame and run it with Keihin CRs (maybe?), the regulation old type disc front, drum rear, spoke wheels, narrow rims and 35mm forks. I doubt very much Brembo 08s are allowed in P4.

Skinny forks, skinny tyres, occasional brakes, extra power etc sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. However, also probably highly entertaining, so bring it on…..🤗

Yeah, but they don't like downdraft angles - at all. And having used curved manifolds on Aermacchis for years I try and avoid them where I can.

Some people think using a 35mm front end has a weight-saving advantage, and when it flexes like crazy under hard braking they change their mind. Done a couple of front-end changes from skinny to 43mm forks and the difference in feel is incredible under hard braking.

You'd be very surprised at just how quick a well set-up post-classic can be ridden - even HDs on skinny everythings can produce incredible lap times if corner speeds are high.

In the ninety‘s I raced a Pantah 650 with big fork and brakes. One guy had a 500 with everything smal, fork 35mm brakes 260 and smal Brembo’s. He said: to go fast, you must not brake. When I started braking, he was shifting up.

To the original question, Greg Parish got a standard framed triple log booked for P4. He ran it for a while at various meetings around 2013-14, so there's precedent if you want to chase that down. Cam Douglas ran his RGS based bike in P5 but was allegedly told (by MA) he could run it in P4 if he fitted suitable wheels.

I suspect if one were to get a triple fast enough to start beating the frontrunners, then its dubious production status in '72 might see it get protested into P5 (as happened with the Z900's). But getting a triple to the front in P4 is going to be difficult, the 750 is and always was better on a racetrack. :)

Regarding matters of eligibility, it's more or less all in black and white here:
Download the Manual of Motorsport, there's a whole chapter on Historic Racing. There are a few specific limitations but it's pretty liberal, P4 bikes can be fast! You've got to "do a Gigi" and read what it doesn't say you can't do.
