Battery for a 1976 3CL

Battery Chocolate Wheel, present day, batteries are a consumable, like oil and tyres. Replace every two years, been covered previous in depth.

Am extensively exposed here to Chinese manufactured electronic products and repair parts. Have to hand it to them when parts of China "manufacture" counterfeit electronic parts, ie sub spec part labeled as superior parts, cause a moment of excitement on the repair bench as the new installed parts explode on power up.

Job lot really with Chinese parts as a broad label, at times the parts are serviceable or better, other times a complete waste of time and effort, or worse Dangerous ( 110V parts used on 240V supply here ). Had early battery failure on many of the brands mentioned in this topic, nothing is certain. As previously covered, the battery is last in the line to indicate a failure, ie the charging system has issues, the battery fails and the battery is blamed, have some sympathy for battery suppliers. "My back tyre only lasted 1500kms... hardly got 10 decent burnouts and 220kph riding on it...sic" j
 
I just bought two PC680 clones that cost a third of the real thing. Mighty Max. Blue and black in colour. Made in Thailand. If they last half as well as a proper Odyssey, I'll be well ahead. The only battery that I have seen outlast an Odyssey is in fact Chinese made. Came from a starter pack. Brand is BBB, and still doing duty well over 10 years. Would have bought again if I could find, desipte country of origin.

Recently bought a billet steering column for my 1950 Chevy pickup made in Perth, cost me $2,250 AUD, could have bought similar unit ex China for $850 AUD

As it may be in the mildly to useless interest, buy SSB batteries here, many the reason, dont expect them to last, do expect them to avoid cold crank start sag, no lower than 11V battery terminal sag on cranking. The "generic" 12 was ok, 14 also, though as i had a custom aluminium bracket already made up for a YB series battery ( 20Ah form )176m/m wide, 87 deep and 155 height )), went for the SSB HVT1 battery at $135 delivered. Boiler plate rating of 440CCA, 20Ah cast frame format, near 8kg however, those Harleys do shake. RTX14 at about $97, the price difference was not a barrier. Substantial terminals on the SSB HVT1, for me a fit for purpose Battery, see how it goes in time. HTH j.

Had incredible life out of an SSB in the little 250 Kwaka, sitting for months and months unused and cranking for a decent amount of time to get fresh fuel in. Replaced with same after it finally died. Put the LiFePo in the SFQ but stored too long. Bought an SSB AGM with 440CCA, maybe same as yours, John - turns the hi comp 880 with zero probs. Easy starting motor so no strain on cranking amps.
 
Quite a few articles on charging lithium batteries on e bikes and even cars citing overheating and causing fires - do have one in my modern Triumph and every now and again requires charging - I don’t do this overnight but the charger is a trickle charger so fingers crossed that’s ok
 
My LiFePo only needed a std simple charger - i used my straight 4A number, but it didn't respond and that was $350 down the gurgler for buying and not using for 2 1/2 years. Have been offered a replacement for $265 but I'm not concerned about the extra kg the SFQ is lugging around - I have more faith in an AGM on long road trips and the beast is fast enough to make the weight a non-issue.
 
Generic Lithium ( 3 differing chemical types ) have their purpose and benefits, been exposed to them over recent years, especially repairing ipads. Ipad batteries ( 2 in each ipad ), are 11Ah which is amazing, and worrisome, same time.

Dont mind even open flooded cell types, car motorcycle batteries. Though the sealed AGM pop valve type are less damaging when a spill occurs and can be mounted at all sorts of angles, save upside down, can see no real drawback in CCA for sealed AGM forms. AU$135 delivered is cost effective, no question. $250+ batteries are not for me, many the reason. j
