Dear all
I received as gift this battery. It is an AGM 12Ah. Could it be too weak for my SF1? I run the risk to burn it?

I successfully run a 16.5AH with 210CCA on my SF.
I have not tried a smaller bateery, but this one has not shown any signs of weakness. I am fully confident in it.
 
Yes the battery is new, never used. I fear the dynamo+regulator ( dimensoned in order to recharge a 24Ah) could damage it and at worse go it up.
 
Ok, thank you Paul, good to know. So I could presume, the regulators differ each others from the amount of current they can give in order to charge the battery, right?
I ask this because I have a desk-charger at home and I can set it on three different levels (1A, 2A, 4A).
1A is specified for motorcycles
2A is specified for mowers and similar
4A cars
On my V7 Guzzi, the battery is 30Ah, and I set 2A when I use my desk-charger, because I think for a so huge battery the regulator on the motorcycle can pomp a very big amount of current, so this battery can afford a charging current of 2A (even 4A).
Now Laverda SF1 has a similar battery (26Ah) so I presume the dynamo+regulator can pomp high current too.
For this reason my question, because I dont know if a so little battery can support an high level of current.
 
Sounds sort of strange to me reading this kind of conversations.
The original generator system is designed and dimensioned correctly. It's technology from the era, it is a charging system in where the parts
are meant to work together as a system.

Two things pop to my mind immediately if you have the generator:
1. It is meant to work with high amperagehour battery. This is because in generator systems the charge and decharge cycles are longer
than in more modern systems. I know people have counter arguments such it worked well with clearly smaller battery. Yes it did that time,
but how in long run if all variables are taken in account? Probability to get a flat battery some time do rise.
2. Charging voltage may be too low for AGM batteries. It stops to charge before the battery is full. Some battery charger may charge it full but
then the battery is not in bike.

A lot of interesting discussions start with an idiot.

I've always had 18 or 20Ah batteries in my 750s with the original regulators. The last battery lasted 8 years which equates to around 50 000km.

Laverda initially used big batteries on the 750s, probably because they didn't want to be ridiculed for choosing not to have a kickstart.

Paul the asked battery is 12 Ah. Were yours AGM?
Smallest one I have seen in a bike with original charging system was 4 Ah if I recall correctly.

I don't know what kind of job would it be to modify charging voltage from the original relay.

My personal opinion is that all modern batteries should have a text what is the correct charging voltage for it.
And regulators should have an adjusting knob.

Well I think all of the answers in this thread are correct and no-one looks idiot.
I also think that Paul has never looked idiot and I think he is a wise man.
Personally to me it is sort of sad often different persons tell different sides of the same thing and some may think if these
thoughts somehow conflict, thoughts about who was right and who was wrong even thought this was not a suitable concept.

Probably works OK but is not optimal to be used with the original generator. You can try it. Only partical risk should be a flat battery.
Depends much of things such how much you drive in urban areas, way you drive, what kind of trips you drive,
how much you drive, how easy your engine starts, how you start it, model of battery, how you maintain the battery and generator,
condition of belt, what kind of electrical accessory you have, how old your battery is during its use period, condition of regulator
and wire sets, how long your battery was storaged before you put it to bike, how it has been storaged, temperature,
what kind of reliability you want for the system (this is not yes/no answer), what is your charging voltage, etc.

Yes. The standard regulator effectively controls the dynamo output to maintain voltage at the battery terminals at 14.3-14.5v (assuming the dynamo is spinning fast enough to balance the bike's electrical load - around 2,000rpm. See 750 Generator output curve )

This is sufficient to maintain a Varta AGM battery at or near its full capacity.

Obviously it's a good idea to check charging voltage to ensure your regulator is functioning correctly

Make sure you fully charge the battery before first use. This helps prolong its life. Typically it will be supplied at ~80% fully charged.
And obviously make sure you charge it if not used for long periods - all batteries self-discharge over time. AGM batteries are better than wet lead acid in that respect, but do like to be kept fully charged. (12.8v or more across the battery terminals)

Finally - to remove the confusion around regulator / battery sizing. That's irrelevant. What matters is regulator / dynamo sizing. The Bosch dynamo needs to work with an 11amp regulator. This is because the dynamo is rated for 150w output. Overloading may occur if the wrong size regulator is used. Unlike an alternator reg/rect which dumps excess voltage output, the regulator manages voltage output by controlling the current input to the field coils.
 
Good points Jouni and Rob. I know of people with SF who swear by their 12amp battery. I wouldn't use one because I often end up having to ride shorter trips. The battery you got for free will not damage anything on the bike, the only risk is that it may not have enough in reserve if you do lots of short trips. If you come to the bike one day and it spins too slowly to start it will be push started very easily. My SF has 10.5 compression and it is fine with a 16amp AGM battery no matter what.
 
So Lovely erda, the answer is yes

Jouni, I have been using AGM batteries for many years now, probably 10.
Lead/acid batteries would die after 3 or 4 years because a plate would drop causing an internal short.

Probably worth mentioning that the SIZE (ie AH) of the battery is more about how much it can store - how many times will it start an SF before its storage capacity drops too low. The regulator controls the size of the 'stream' of amps that are allowed to go to the battery. If you use a 12AH battery it just means the reg will control the stream according to that battery's needs, which will probably be different than if you use a 24AH battery. So the reg may cut in for a shorter time, depending of course on how much you are 'removing' from the battery's storage.

Answer is still YES. :)
