Buying in from EU

Regaining sovereignty, eh? Fuck, yeah... and HMRC expects us to pay for the privelege!
<snip> they can't all be THAT dumb. Colossal clusterfuck imho.
Not going to disagree with you there, Piet, except to say ...

Yes, they really CAN be that dumb. Or negligent. Or arrogant. Or obstinate. Or whatever you might want to call it.

Let's be honest: since when did the state or its employees have to pay for the misery they inflict on the citizen, be they home grown or overseas? And HMRC (and, I venture, pretty much any other tax authority you might like to name ...) isn't short of form in that area.

Maybe now that it's more expensive and it takes longer getting things into this country we might actually get around to manufacturing things again
Yeah, right. We're having the same absurd notions being banded about idiot pundits (and sometimes politicians) here in France.

Get real, people. The world has moved on since 1965. The major markets for manufactured goods are no longer in Western Europe, with its ageing and already materially rich populations. They're in the expanding economie such as India and Asias with their young, growing and materially relatively poor populations.

Given that, where do you think manufacturing is going to be based in the next few decades?

Manufacturing things for large international groups, yes.
The UK is abolishing the unfortunately too rare EU rules on the duration of the working week and will no doubt do away with minimum wage which the EU imposed. An off shore platform with cheap labour with the British taxpayer paying the miserly state pensions and health service. Because it won't be the UK that will be able to tax large international groups for the profits they will make there. Only a larger structure with more grunt, like the EU will tax Google, Amazon and co.
