Carb Balancing

Why not use a thin-walled socket with the screwdriver down the middle.

Reckon a socket may provide a bit more 'feel'. Just thought of it and will try it out the next time I fiddle around with the carbs.

And just how are you going to tighten the socket with a screwdriver through the middle of it ?

Took me a while to get my head around the fact that the 'nut' is the adjuster and the phillips screw locks it as well ;)

Carbtune reckons you should be happy if they are all within 2cm. After several (read many) attempts trying to get them exactly equal I gave up and agreed with Carbtune.

OK if you're happy with that.

I don't stop untill I have them within a couple of millimetres of another, across the entire rev range.  Certainly makes itself felt.
No use blue-printing every engine component and taking shortcuts in the end.

2cm?  :o Nah, I'd consider that way off and aim, as Piet said, for a couple of mm.  BTW, if you can't get a decent reading they work upside down- you have to use them that way for boxer Beemers.

From Carbtune

"The engine should be warm and running at just enough above idle speed so it doesn?t falter and stop during adjustments. Don?t try to balance at high engine speeds. Adjust to makers specification or average of initial readings, but the readings should be balanced to within 2 cmHg (some models up to 4 cmHg) of each other."

Ah, now, how is the scale measured?  I've never actually looked on mine- maybe 2 cm of mercury is just a couple of mm of movement of the stainless slugs.

Well I can say, after a lot of fucking around over 2 days I got mine to within a couple of mill. I've said it before and I'll day it again, Mikuni adjustment is a poxy set up!
Just got back from a 750 kay ride and it ran fantastic. Got some oil leak issues, an on going one from the inner Alt cover, new gasket too, than I used some 3bond on it and it still leaks!!
Also the selector cover need a new gasket too, so I ended up with a well oiled boot. Also it looks like it pissing out of the base gasket, but that could be from a very loose starter motor.
The gasket was pretty fucked up when I removed it so hopefully it isn't the base gasket, don't fancy pulling the barrels again :o

ay Rob,  i'm also chasing a pesky oil seep from the oil seal & sleeved nut on the crank.  (banghead)
i'll get it sorted one of these days.  missed the odd gear shifting up heading back from Phillip Island.  a slippery boot & lever.

& will you blokes get ya farken units calibrated.  ???
a cm is not a farken cmHg & is not a farken mill,,  or farken mm !!
& 2 cmHg => 0.387 psi.  well,, i'm guessing it is close enough.

cheers,  Mark

check the cover screws aren't bottoming out in the tapped holes before the gasket gets clamped down tight.
that's what caused Clyde's inner alt cover gasket to be seeping.  had to grind a mm or 2 off 'em.
also had the leaking starter motor gasket.  was pissing out of there and down into the alternator cover.  reckon the mounting flange might distort if the bolts are over-tightened?

Well if you say so.  I just try to get the shiny bits in the tubes lined up. :-*

Hey Mark, I'm kind of thinking that the pesky alt cover leak may be caused by the loose starter motor, where does the oil drain too he asks? The starter may have been loose for some time and progressively got worst to the point it was just pissing out. How loose was the starter do you ask?? Well loose enough to be sitting in the "well" bouncing around :o :o I filled up with fuel 100 kays before then stopped down the road for a short break so it fell out in the last 60 kays!! Probably explains the sometime starting problem, hit the button and it goes blup, do it again and it spins as it should and fires up. So fingers crossed all my problems will be solved with a new starter gasket. Will take the rocker cover off tomorrow and check the torque and dodgy head.
The exhaust cam better be running freely >:(  ok then mm :D

Mark,

I don't see no farkin' cmHg anywhere in there...

Shoulda sed so in the first place! :D

ay Piet,
correct,, Davo did not say so in the first place.  but the missing farken Hg was found in reply #30, when Davo quoted Carbtune.
pay attention!  ;)
