Clutch pushrod & ball issues

They still use those folding rulers here. When I came here 20 years ago you couldn't even find spring loaded steel tape in hardware shops, everyone told me that they were shit and didn't work (!!), but now they are pretty much universal, probably because of all the imported workers from more modern Eastern European countries.
 
I have a laser tape measure (don't remember what brand). It amazes me how inaccurate it is even over short distances. It's a completely useless piece of shit that just spits out random numbers. I'd be better off guessing the distance.
