Clutch springs

Hi Paul It can take a bit of mucking around to get that neutral position set up on a 500 (well I found that on my bike).
You have to remove the clutch and very fine tune the centering of the push pull forks on the selector drum.
I got mine a lot better but its still not perfect.
Yep, that was stage 1.
Paul

I've been convinced to pull the whole clutch to bits. Wives and friends can be persuasive.
Command was ok and it was missing the ball between the two push rods before I'd replaced last week. Clutch springs are at 46.5mm for a nominal 47.5. Wear limit is 46mm. They'll be changed. What is certainly the reason for the very heavy clutch is a very marked hub. The fine files will be out tomorrow.

very difficvult to get that right with hand filing Paul, if they dont all make contact together, then the highest ones will wear quickly, and any metal removed will increase tye rattle, try to obtain a better one or even a new one (this is Corrinne we are talking about here) is the Zane one the same? or Atlas?
I dont remember the engine and chassis numbers not matching when I viewed and bought the bike on your behalf? I do remeber the headstock stamping though

Engine and chassis do not match Clem.
I've no idea if the Zane parts are identical.

Paul

Zane bits are not identical, but if I'm not completely mistaken, the Atlas hub may be the same.

Those indents might cause clutch drag or slip, but will have no influence on the cable pull. Clean it up as well as you can anyway...

Come to think of it, you're right.
There was also a roller from a needle bearing inside the gear shaft, probably put in to replace the missing 6.35mm ball?

I'm cleaning it all up anyway.

Paul

Correction.
The roller is the little needle that stops the clutch drum bearing inner race from turning on the shaft. A very strange system.
I'd forgotten about it and it fell out unnoticed when I took the drum off.

Paul

Fixed.
Burrs filed out of the drum
New springs
Mechanism on the right greased and set up
Cable with plenty of silicone down it and as loosely routed as possible.

The 500 clutch cable is a weak point. It has to go down 90° along the front frame tube then another 90° back towards the cable stop. Not a good design.
