Mike Hawthorn takes us round Le Mans in his D-Type in 1956 ( bloody cyclists , anyone would think this was a public road or something ) ...... the final approach to the pits seems to have been one of the modifications Hawthorn was talking about ( It looks different to me , anyway ) ..... . put in place after the terrible `55 crash , the blame for which some attributed to Hawthorn ....

Hawthorn was killed in a road accident in `59 driving a Jaguar on the Guildford By Pass ......he was reckoned to be racing a Mercedes Benz being driven by Formula One Team Owner and entrant Rob Walker ...... When the police arrived on the scene they advised Walker not to say anything that might incriminate himself .............. so he didn`t .........

A very country road kinda course - lots of trees to look at as you go past at 175mph! Long too and very fast averages by the look of it. Having never seen footage of it before, I'm surprised.

Yes , and a little different nowadays I expect ! ...... What I noticed is that even at the fairly modest speed he was travelling at , he would lose traction on one or two of the slower bends ...... What it would be like keeping it under control at full on racing speeds on those skinny tyres you can only imagine ......

Driving a non registered race car, using both sides of road, nearly has a head on and says “ typical French!”
Well they would be, it’s a road in France! 😂 With The advances in racing car safety now would be a great time to reintroduce the cravat and web backed driving gloves.

I did a lap of Willow Springs as a passenger on a racing sidecar once. It was very physical and demanded perfect timing, but it was cool how the G-force allowed me to easily hang off the rig skimming the track once I was in position. The thought of missing that position and being in the wrong place to corner also was terrifying! I suspect we were barely at racing speed too…..
