Cool Videos

AFAIK the new rule in the UK Highway Code is that pedestrians/cyclists going straight on at a junction have priority. So if you are a motorist wishing to turn left at a junction you have to give way to pedestrians/cyclists going straight on.
Generally, when a pedestrian steps out into the road and you run them over, the chances are you will be found to be at fault if you kill or injure them based on the hierarchy of vulnerability. So even if a cyclist, who is also classified as a vulnerable road user, collides with a pedestrian they will still be considered to be at fault, even if the pedestrian stepped out in front of them.
A friend of mine, riding his motorcycle to work in the dark, and I seem to recall it was wet as well, ran into a pedestrian who stepped out into the road in front of him, and the pedestrian died. It took a long time for him to clear his name of any fault. Eventually, the court accepted the pedestrian was drunk and my friend wasn’t riding inappropriately and had no chance of avoiding the collision.

Most pedestrians (and drivers!) seem to be looking at a screen these days, so no matter what the rule books say, there is a need to proceed with a huge degree of caution. 🤳

I vey much enjoyed driving around the small-to-mid sized towns of Virginia (US) recently. Everyone taking their time, driving slowly and courteously. Zero aggression. Total consideration for pedestrians (which I felt was done out of common decency, and not because a rule book said so). Very civilised. It was a delight, compared to the 'fuck you, I'm coming through' UK.

Give everyone one a gun in the UK and watch the road manners improve..

In small towns around the world it is not unusual to actually be acquainted with the driver or pedestrian. Act like an aggressive idiot and word gets around and back to you eventually, like somebody mentioning to your wife or mama in the grocery store or nail salon that you almost hit them. It enforces courtesy.

It's probably pretty much universal all over the world that pedestrians have right of way.

In Australia, drivers are required to watch out for pedestrians at all times and avoid running them down. It doesn't matter whether they're on a pedestrian crossing or wandering around aimlessly on any other part of the road.

While it's incumbent on pedestrians to act sensibly and in accordance with the road rules (you can be ticketed for jay walking or walking along a freeway) they still have right of way if they come into conflict with traffic wherever they happen to be or whatever else they're doing, like looking at their phone for example. It makes sense really. It just means you're not allowed to simply mow them down if you think they're somewhere they shouldn't be.

An interesting corollary of the universal right of way of pedestrians is this little scrap of info I found online. It relates to Australian law but it may be relevant elsewhere.
"It’s important to note that this rule means that if you’ve been injured as a pedestrian while crossing a road without looking, or while distracted or drunk, you may still be entitled to compensation for your injuries."

Obviously, you'd have to have a death wish to walk out across a busy freeway while pissed and texting on your phone, but at least you'll be able to sue someone for running you over!

Unless they are rich and can afford a top lawyer. A bloke got off killing a pedestrian here, rainy night, zebra crossing with lighting, bloke didn't slow down and whammo, clear cut case but his smart lawyer had his team measure that the lighting was a few lumens under normal so he got off scot free. It used to be like mentioned that drivers were courteous to pedestrians, but then the country got rich and everyone was in a hurry.
Biggest fear for me is pedestrians in the dark in black clothes (so cool) with no reflective markings (so uncool). Often there is no footpath and it is wet and they cannot even hear you coming because not only are they looking at their phone but have those white things in their ears. Death wish?.

....... For your amusement ......... No peds were harmed in the filming of this video ....... ( But it`s ok to scare the shit out them ..... it`s the only thing they understand ........... :) ............... ) ................

You can lose count of how many cross in defiance of a red wait sign ...... but don`t worry ... RJ is always willing and able to point out the error of their ways ........ and he does give way to those who aren`t on a controlled crossing ....... especially the younger and prettier they are ..........

VW said their vehicles were complaint and have to say VW made some great engines - Look at the Volvo 2.3L EFI "RED BRICK". Can't say why the VW Jetta Diesel caused so much Ruckus after all it was highly engineered under German specifications ;o)

One thing the 2.3L EFI Gas Read Brick would NEVER do is kiss a valve on a piston if the timing belt slipped or broke where as the Jetta diesel engine self destruct.

I loved Volvo's specifically the 1974 142 GL Coupe with the B20, Mechanical Fuel Injection, 4 Spd Leyland w/Electric OD. and Posi 3.90 rear end.
She took car of the year according to Motor Trend. You could push start that car without a battery.

This Volvo was exactly like the one I had (same colour):
Uni-body, 15" wheels, Fantastic smooth torque to 7000rpm.

Toss up between her and the Toyota Crown but I loved my Volvo - Both FAST and Rugged Cars in their time ;o)

1974 Toyota Crown:
Really hate to say this but that Toyota was a better car then the Volvo !
She had a full frame, long suspension, 15" wheels, Straight 6 with a 4 BBL Carb, Manual 5 Spd, Posi Rear that could barrel over 1ft pot holes under a foot of slush at speed in a hurricane with ease and thick skin metal that never rusted.

My 2 favorite cars of all time and I drove them both - The Volvo was just a little more sporty with the element of risk ;o)

I also had North American 70 Z28 Camaro with a BBC MKIV 461ci 625Hp and a 72 Dodge Challenger 340 Mag Rally. Really that Dodge was a great handling car with a small block V8 and torsion front suspension but built of tinfoil that rusted out in 2 years. You cannot compare either of them American TOYS to real cars like that Volvo or that Toyota.

I had 1969 Ford Lotus Cortina that I rallied the shit out off in my 1st year of University - Paid $1,600 for her brand new and sold her a year later for $1,200 with the McPherson Struts SHOT that would cost over $1,000 to replace at the time - Then bought a used 68 Volvo 142 123S for $600 - I put over 500,000 on her driving her patiently hard all over Northern Ontario in the worst of weather with my job as a CNR Operator and Train Dispatcher ;o)

My first engine rebuild was a 142s, I did it under a shade tree in my yard. Pulled the engine out with a block and tackle from an overhanging branch and rebuilt it using a Haynes manual and the assistance of a machine shop. Mine was a B20 with twin SUs….

Alzero ; Great Engine - You should have considered the Marine cam in her rebuild (Great Torque and great Exhaust sound) - Had to rebuild mine once because I pulled away onto a freeway at -30c before warming her up properly and broke a piston skirt lugging her into 3rd which fell into the oil pan. Drove her the rest of the winter on 3 cylinders and rebuild her in the spring ;o)

That was a 68 142S B20 Dual SU 4 Spd no OD long stick but man did that 74 142 GL B20 Top Loader Leyland 4 Spd w/OD with Mechanical Pill Fuel Injection model really wake the 140 up - BEST Volvo ever made in my opinion.

The 74 had bigger and stronger Uni-Body frame rails in her which promoted air drying a prevented rusting plus retained the wish-bone front cross member that lasted for ever compared to the 75 and later 242 McPherson strut front suspension - But can say the RED BRICK B23 EFI VW engine was just as good if not better then the B20 - My last Volvo was an 84 244 GL Auto W/OD and the M2.3 EFI - Put over 300,000 miles on her raizing a family - Gave her away a few year ago - Minimal rust and drive train perfect - Never burt oil - Ran Truckers 15W40 Diesel DINO in her. Fast, dependable car for a Sedan.

The 73's had a fantastic Air Circulation System that could be laid into the 74.

One thing about them SU's other being a great performance carb; BUT, when it got around -15c or -30c you need a quart of hot water to pour over them - lift the sliders and spray some ether in them - then BANG you off on your way ;o)
