Cool Videos

The bit at the end about Dave Emde still being out on the racetrack ( due to being lumbered with the giant cameras ) made me smile ......
I rode with David on the street a bit and he was blazingly fast. It showed me the difference between 'fast' as seen by a normal rider and what he could do... seemingly with little effort (he was not a very intense guy). One time that I remember he had a woman on the back and apparently she liked wheelies - he and the VFR he was riding had no apparent issue with that, but I thought at the time she might've been a bit nuts. In the end a turn on Old Julian Highway got him, long after his retirement from racing. I always think to be careful as I go through through there now. Wes Cooley's house was at the west end of the same road in the 'Country Estates'

Sorry to hear about that ...........

I remember his brother Don was signed by BSA for the 1971 Daytona 200 ....... and then he went on to win the following year on a TZ350 , first two-stroke and smallest bike to win ....... and set ( the only ? ) father and son Daytona victory ...... dad Floyd won in 1948 .

Dave won the AMA 250 cc championship in `76 , I believe ......... Quite a racing family !

So your engine wasn’t built in Zane Hamish, but how much of the existing engine was built in Breganze?

Years ago I dealt with a packaging machinery manufacturer in Germany, they built great machines.

On my first visit I was surprised to find they hardly had any equipment…. pedestal drill and a bench grinder “‘Every’ part is made by suppliers or contractors” their factory was purely an assembly line.

Flipped me out. As an aside, they refused (point blank, no excuses) to send a machine to Australia unless I flew to the ‘factory’ to sign off on a Pre-delivery Inspection. One year I did 8 x 24 hour flights to sign off machines.

Hotel door should have had my name rather than a number on it 🙄

More usual than you might think, Chris.
When I visited the Porsche Factory, they were very proud of the fact that almost every component was bought in.
Their focus was on checking the accuracy of the components, before assembly.
If any significant number of parts failed the quality checks, the contract would be terminated and the manufacturer would lose their "Supplier to Porsche" status.
A far higher cachet than "By Royal Warrant", in the UK.

I'm going to visit Sammy shortly.
A mate of mine is a very close friend of Sammy and used to make his frames and aluminium tanks etc back in the day,
He keeps reminding me that I need to visit and he will ask Sammy to show me around, I promised last week to do it this month or I will regret it.
I also own the only Rickman Metisse that was owned by Sammy in 1967, Frame number 1009 although I think he probably only owned it as a sales object as it was fitted with all the parts from a Bonneville TT a few months later in the states.
Incredible man.

So pld but vigerios as hell. From his videos. Shame his car park isn't bigger so he could open up his amazing exhibits.

Did Yvon Du Hamel ever win Daytona? I know his son Miguel won at least once.

According to Wiki .... ( which I refer to when I can`t be bothered to look up , or don`t have access to printed matter ) ..... Yvon won the 1968 Daytona 250 cc Lightweight race , beating Phil Read ...... but only managed second place in the 200 , his 350 Yamaha beaten by Cal Rayborn`s Harley Davidson ........... This was his best result in the 200 , so nearly but not quite .........

Seems he tipped the scales at 57 kg ! ......... and stood at only 5 feet 3 inches tall ......... a little shorter than Admiral Lord Nelson ( 5 feet 5 inches ) , an inch taller than Charles Manson ( 5 feet 2 inches ) ....... but positively towering over Queen Victoria ( 4 feet 10 inches ) .......... none of whom ever competed in the Daytona 200 , according to Wiki .........

Miguel won five 200`s BTW ..........

Yvon won Daytona in '68 Lightweight (250cc) and '69 and Miguel won Daytona 5 times. Mario (Miguel's brother) Failed To Launch. As an aside an acquaintance worked for HRC and built all of Miguel's Formula Extreme bikes, (I ended up with one of Miguel's old radial master cylinders on my VTR1000....... wish it came with some of Miguel's talent).

Edit.... appologies Yvon held pole position in 1969 at Daytona.

No Laverdas ........ but nice vibes .......... think I`ll get hold of a Harley Road King and move to NYC ..........

Every other filling station in New York is a BP one ......... don`t watch the last ten minutes if you`re feeling hungry ............

BTW ........ mention of the H-D Fat Boy reminds me of something I never realised until recently .......

When Harley Davidson found themselves being overwhelmed by Japanese bike imports in the early `80`s , they approached Ronald Regan and got him to slap an additional tariff on all Japanese bikes over 700 cc ........ which helped Harley survive through the rest of the decade .......

In celebration of putting one over the Japanese , Harley Davidson introduced the Fat Boy model ........

Fat Boy being an amalgamation of Fat Man ( the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima ) ..... and Little Boy ( the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki ) , killing over a quarter of a million men , women , and children .........

No hard feelings then ............

Can't comment on riding in New York City (I avoid large cities if possible) but New York State has amazing roads..... I'm hoping to get just south west of the Catskills this summer if possible.

I've been looking to cross this one off of the list for a while now.

While the Ronnie Regan tariffs anecdote is true the naming of the the Fat Boy model is an urban legend. The combination of the Evolution engine and the Fat Boy model certainly did help fill Milwaukee's coffers all through the '90's and early '00's with the Twin Cam engine.

Ducati NYC Vlog rides out from Brooklyn to the Catskills , which as you say has some nice quiet roads ..... and also to the Eastern end of Long Island , which is more rural than you would expect .......

I'll have to check that Vlog out, ty for the tip.

The roads in southern Ontario are pretty bland for the most part...... but NY State and Pennsylvania are only a couple of hours away.
