caratacus said:ah , the dreaded cracks in the cylinder head! sadly a very normal situation with earlier laverda triples.
They crack through the sharp corner of the cam chain tunnel area , a rather basic mistake to make on the part of laverda, any student of mechanical design would know to avoid sharp corners for this very reason, take for example the unexplained losses of 'liberty' ships during the battle of the atlantic in ww2
and the tragic losses of the early 'commet' airliners ,square corners! , not good.
later machines had radiused and strengthened castings in this area and were less prone to problems of this type.
yes it is possible to make a good repair by welding ,but it needs to be done by somebody that knows what they are doing or, 'B' find a late model head with the improved casting.
while on the subject of laverda's and cracks , frames that crack around the headstock area , a problem from the first triples right up until the very last and the early cast wheels were not so hot .Oh and exhaust roses and inlet stubbs!...
Laverda triples , they just crck me up !
But and this is the problem they get under your skin ,I could not part with mine it is just superb despite all its flaws.

Stress concentration on sharp corners, combined with expansion and contraction by heating and cooling cycles would start a crack.
A nice radius instead of a sharp corner on the inside of the tunnel without adding any thickness probably would have prevented the crack.
Not sure if vibration is the primary cause.
Even so! With the crack there it is not going anywhere else is it? Unless it goes much deeper, which after all these years is unlikely.
The crack is a means for the head to get rid of stress, if you weld it up the stress is back with avengeance surely?
