Hi,
I am getting major clatter or bounce in my front wheel when breaking. It is lessened when I use the rear brake first but if I just use the front brake I can see the axle movement up and down and feel it though the bars, ie, bad traction. I replaced the 20w (heavy) oil with 10w and it improved a bit but can't work out why it just started to happen.....any ideas would be welcomed?

The symptoms sound like typical loose, or fucked, steering head bearings to me.
 
+1 for steering head, although there’s a few things that can get loose and cause nasty vibrations.

If you’re not keen on sorting it yourself there’s a very good motorcycle transporter in your area who could take it to a mechanic of your choice 👍

If you "can see the axle movement up and down and feel it though the bars, ie, bad traction." that sounds like it emanates from the brakes.
If it has disc brakes, possibly warped or not mounted parallel.
Check runout.
 
Stupid question, is this change happening on a road where it didn't happen before? The recent weather in Oz has destroyed plenty of previously smooth roads. Same tyre pressures and also the tyre itself. How old are the tyres, any odd wearing with them, who made them, brand and size? Try holding a screwdriver close to the tyre and spin it to check for how round the tyre and wheels are. Check the discs to see if they are warped or any fixings are loose. Do the hard wiggle test of the wheels for wheel bearing issues. Have you lost a wheel weight, now out of balance? Holding the front brake hard on and bouncing the forks looking for any tiny knock in the steering head bearings plus having the front wheel off the ground and giving the handlebars a sideways knock to see if there is drag on the steering head bearings, it should fall to full lock easily. You probably have tried all this, it's pretty common knowledge.

Currently paying 5 on rotors if you’re keen.
1.50 on steering head, 4.00 on calliper bolts and 4.50 on wheel bearings.

Keep us informed Tim. For what it’s worth, changing to 10w was a good idea, but we’ll need to know what machine and what you’ve already checked 👍

A dollar fucken fifty on steering head! And a fiver on rotors. 20 - 10w oil helped (mask the problem). Lighter oil wouldn’t have an effect on rotor issues

You’ve gotta get out more Andy.
 
A tenner on worn fork internal parts.. it is chattering, not wobbling..?
you can lead the forks to oil but ya gotta get them to valve right.. right..?

Sudden change? Steering head bearings don't just go outa whack on a whim. And generally disc rotors don't suddenly decide to warp. I'm guessing summit inside broke? Actually without riding the bike I have absolutely no idea :cool:

Ok, so I didn’t read take much notice of the Sudden change bit😉

Reading on the forum is like listening to the Mrs waffling on, I only hear certain bits

Thanks for all the responses. Btw, the bike is an sf3 with cerianis etc... After mentioning the problem to two friends since i posted, it was just loosening the fork leg locking bolts, plunging the forks and tighten up again. All good now.

I am far from a twin bloke but I would have thought such a late-model twin would have Maz Forks. If Cerianis does it have those mudguard braces with rubber mounts?
Nice easy fix then, a bit of binding up.

None of the above Andy. A bit of fork bind, happened all of a sudden :unsure:

The bookie is probably down the pub licking his wounds this arvo ;)
 
SFs never came with Marzos.

Yeah, I wonder why the stiction issue suddenly appeared? Or maybe Tim, you hadn't had it on a bumpy road? Is the bike new to you?
