Dellorto PHF rebuild

Sending the carbs to a specialist for repair can get really expensive. The last price I heard to restore a set of carbs for a SF2 was $2000.

They are easy to repair yourself.

Slight thread hijack:
Do PHF carbs with round top covers require O-rings in the groove of the cover?
I have an engine running with 36 PHF carbs, no noticeable air leaks, but without the O-rings in the groove of black plastic covers.
The engine with carbs came that way to me.
I've looked at several Dellorto parts lists, some list the O-ring , some don't?

Still a lot of rip-off artists in the scene...

Even if they should require multiple ultra-sonic baths, a set of triple carbs shouldn't cost much more than €800-900 including slides to bring them back to useable condition. Without slides, around €600 should do the trick, including 3 hours labour. Or are the yanks charging 400+ bucks/hour? For 2 grand US I'd expect them to be completely restored to as new condition, inside and out.

Should have o-rings, Gerald.

Not really a critical area unless you're going off-road with a lot of water crossings. ;)

For 2 grand US you should get a bike with the carbs.

I did think $2000 was a bit much and they were done by a well known Italian bike specialist who does good work.

They carbs were restored both cosmetically and mechanically to as new condition. The owner showed them to me and they did look good.

The orings in the Dellorto rebuild kit aren’t itemised sadly. However, I understand the o-ring for the choke tube in the float bowl is supposed to be a 2.9mm ID x 1.78mm thk. There is an oring this size in the kit but it seems far too small to get on…is it usually so tight ? Im concerned it might split getting it on.

Have you checked the corresponding parts on here Mike?..........see diagram and click on parts for more info.

Many thanks, that’s actually giving a larger O ring size. I’ll measure ones in kit and go with that. The smaller size I mentioned is what’s given for the viton size in the table that Paul has posted

I put my carbs in a bucket of Berryman's chem dip - fresh stuff if they are really locked up like my 3Cs were. Then the bucket goes inside my large, cheap Chinese ultrasonic ($75 a few years ago), which holds about 10L. That method has cleaned out anything I've thrown at it. Finish in water with some detergent or surfactant.

Be careful with the chemicals in the ultrasonic as some are very detrimental to the alloy of the carbs- use one that is specifically safe for aluminium parts, for example NOT Simple GREEN though SimpleGreen purple formula is good. Don't assume it'll clear blocked passages without some help from air blast or carb cleaner spray tube.

The tight Orings will benefit from tiny amount of silicone grease warmed in your hands.
