While rummaging through old pictures, I found this of a 3c, which I took at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps in 1976. Does anyone know what the container next to the oil cooler is for?

It's certainly not a spirit level, if the sticker on the seat is anything to go by!
Maybe it's chain lube, as the owner's not bothered about a chainguard.

When I found the above picture from the 1976 GP in Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps), other interesting ones came to light.

E.g. those showing Sheene and Agostini. Ago was not very successful in 1976. He started in his own private team using various race bikes - in Belgium a RG500.

Today it's hardly imaginable to perform with “Yamaha” ad on his leathers while riding a Suzuki...

I think its an oil filter, they were sold for British bikes at the time and I remember the shape of them, usually they were mounted horizontally, and IIRC the hoses both came to the same end with one central and the other on the edge, you can see the central hose connection clearly, and (maybe) the other one behind it.

Definitely a Scottoiler you can see the vacuum float- the oil filters you’re referring to were Triumph Trident paper elements in a tube, same size as a Scottoiler. Seems he felt the need for an oiler but took off the chain gaurd…

Seems a bit large, but my first thought was Scottoiler as well.

Maybe life became boring and he lubed the front tyre... for more excitement?o_O

I've tried to blow the picture up to take a closer look and I'm still not sure what it is. What I do know is that it sure is an ugly carbuncle!
Oil filters, if fitted, should be tucked away and out of sight!

I think I was there as well... sitting with a beer on the stone wall of Hotel la Source with the riders flashing past, a mere metre, or less, away. Can't remember Ago though.

Saw Ago later that year at the Nürburgring, entered with the RG500 but he rode the MV to his last race win, which also turned out to be final victory for the MV. Think he was on a Yamaha for the 350.

Yeah, it's interesting what one can find about this race on the www today.

Phil Read showed up in the practice only and then disappeared headlong before the race. It was rumored that he'd run out of money and could no longer pay his team.

I saw Ago at the Nürburgring in 1974 with his MV and of course he was a hero. Barry Sheene too. It was rumored that he'd a hole in the front of his helmet so he could have a quick smoke on the starting grid.

Barry's teammate John Williams won the 500cc race ahead of him and Marcel Ankoné

Back then, as spectators, we'd no clue 'bout all this - and I think we looked accordingly:

Chains ( rear ) in the day were little better than reinforced spaghetti, one street light drag and park around the corner to readjust the chain. As for the "630" types, seen them break, not too mention sucking 10hp...

Love the "Young men with vision" stay away from mirrors when holding younger days photo's. j.

Bonsoir Jo

Wow - then we have the explanation! I wouldn't have expected the owner from 48 years ago to speak out, that's really great! But the filter is missing on your foto.

There's this thing called google CK! :)

Good evening Jo
WOW !!!! that's my beauty, it's an oil filter that I made out of plexiglass, inside, there was a trident oil filter, I had some in stock since the engine exploded at 21000 km on the highway returning from Le Castellet. What a shit this bike is!!
I like this system, I saw the oil rising towards the radiator when starting. I also made a stainless steel side stand taken from the footrest
I still have this 1000, almost 90,000km and it has never left me broken down on the side of the road. and the igloo tent is also fantastic, no need for a stake for the night just inflate that's all. I could sleep on the asphalt
