DMC optical sensor warning!

Good man Bruce, question answered and mystery ( for me ) solved, why the flying leads. Check, no pcb, did not know that. regards j.

Yes, very useful Haggis. No mystery now... a smile here. What ever substitute is chosen, mechanical spec will be as important as the electrical, as drop in replacement. There will be a solution if not already found in the Omron part. j

Jota996, there is nil stock or likely to be any at RS. Checked the basic physical dimensions of the Omron EE-SX1088-W1, also listed as obsolete though stock on hand at Farnell is 354 worldwide, buy up big while you can i suggest to all. The Omron should drop straight in mount holes at 19m/m, slot width at 3m/m, height at 10m/m, fly lead out colours may need attention to data sheets. Electrical ought to be compatible, check that after my morning tea break.

The Omron exceeds the Honeywell electrical specification in all regards, both are only 85C rated devices, as such will suffer in the elevated cavity ambient in service, dependent on DMC static IR led current, the Omron has a more robust IR led as specified. HTH.

** checked all the common supply houses on the planet, Farnell is your last hope, if stock on hand is correct, buy big Lads, the clock is "ticking....love the Hives btw, new stage clothes the biz... "Hate to say i told you so..." about slotted opto's..

*** seems Element14 in Australia is holding the last stock, may be ordered through Farnell, though not sure of the inter company links these days, since Element14 is an Avnet division now, no matter online ordering is your friend. That wraps this up for me, this topic. Have fun. j

DigiKey has the most in stock but a high price! The version without the W11 in its part number has no wires if you don't mind soldering some on. The W11 version appears to be the only one being discontinued.

Better than me Bruce, checked the stock on line and reported nil stock on some of the suppliers indicated, Digikey a first stop. Not sure why that is.. no matter, the news is good for all concerned whom persevere with opto's.

Cannot complain about the support here can the die hards, we are doing DMC support for them. The body width is 5m/m ( 4.7m/m ) so should drop in for the leaded version. Did well Bruce, j.

John,

Had they used a hall effect sensor, we would not be having this discussion!

You also used opto sensors in your first version of the IIS ignition. I am guessing the Bosch charging coils had so much stray magnetism it made it impossible to use hall effect?

I will be ordering some of the Omron sensors. All my triples have your ignition except one has the Moto Witt, which has left me on the side of the road. The IIS ignitions have been working for thirty years with no problems ever.

Right you are Bruce, did use slotted optos for many reasons, H.E. in the day were rare and really only available from Allegro, one aspect was the concern of magnetic coupling of the alternator flywheel inducing unwanted trigger events into the iis pcb, could/may have happened as the early oem bosch HKZ pickups had a mu-metal shield ie bosch were concerned also, for the oem bosch magnet assembly rotor or flywheel. Later stages this shield was deleted and so with replacement ND flywheel the Japanese managed con concentrate the permanent magnets field where it was designed to go and very little leakage magnetic field occurred, had proper USA magnetic field strength meter with flexible hall effect probe sensor, to measure the actual field while the flywheel rotated at various positions.

As then happened i designed out the slotted opto, there was some further R and D H.E. field testing required, and the "sticky" magnet on impulse rotor survivng eleveated temperature and 8,000+ rpm. One early version did lose its magnet, despite the adhesive spec telling me it would hold, it was flung off while owner out and about... known on this board, a smile here. Glad of the enduring service of iis Bruce, though luck and good design go hand in hand, bye for now j.

Thanks very much Bruce.

Situation in France just now. True or not, who knows?

Thanks Bruce.

Freight will be significant, especially in low quantity, also minimum order value. Coming from my trade, quantity purchase is the essential cost mitigation position. For a bench repair of, for instance, JBL powered monitor, the drive transistors need replacing ( do not change a damaged item, you change all of them ), i will order replacements to a price break, usually 25, less offered may be 10, then am well positioned to support further repairs. May only break even on first repair, downstream repairs are quick and stock on hand, very cost effective.

Be better to order in larger quantity than 1 ( if the case ) postage to other users on the forum may be cost effective, to defray the initial purchase. j

If you are looking to make a complete sensor/cable assembly to carry on the bike for road side repairs, here is the connector Moto Witt used.

so the photocell, Mauser part no EESX1088W11, arrived from the good ole USA , I sorted out the wire functions, Anode, Cathode, Collector and Emitter and all wired up. All continuity checked etc and nada... not a sausage... bugger all, put the Witt in test mode to double check and no sparks at all..
Going to re fit the original one to check then I suppose it must be a faulty photocell...... cant think of anything else?....

Oh well lets get a Yamaha out to play on....
