Earth points

Was watching a show about CERN, and antimatter. Might explain why the smoke gets out. We need better containment. More magnets maybe.

Good one Davo but I got you stuck on the end of my STRING.

Greatly appreciated. You're one smart cookie, always enjoyed your humour and one great teacher at times.

Makes Puppies think and perhaps look into Ohms' Law: V=IR.

Believe it or not "Space Cadet" (Remember that computer game was one of my nicks), but very few dare to race me in real life.

So DO electrons flow from Positive to Negative or from Negative to Positive?

They flow from negative pole to positive pole. But there is an agreement that the direction of current (amperes) is just the opposite.

So what's an excited electron which is considered positive.

Is not Current Flow (AMPs) a Theory and yet to be proven. My Dad's 55 Ford had a 6 volt battery with a Positive Ground.

By the way that old Ford coupe was FAST and ate up many Rocket 98's and 55 Chevy's in her day.  ;o)

Electrons are always negatively charged Ron. Never positive.

A quick primer on particle physics ...

In classical particle physics, electrons orbit the nucleus of an atom to form a molecule. The orbits are considered to happen in several different levels, or distances from the nucleus. The closest orbit can contain 2 electrons, then next level 8 electrons, and so on. I forget the numbers for subsequent orbits, but they generally increase as they get further from the nucleus.

An electron that jumps from a low orbit to a higher one is considered to be "excited" because it has a higher energy level, but it's still negatively charged. The protons in the nucleus of the atom are positively charged. They usually match the number of electrons and balance the total charge of the atom. An atom with a different number of protons and electrons has a net residual charge (either positive or negative depending which particle is in preponderance) and is called an ion rather than an atom.

The positive equivalent of an electron is called a positron. The protons in the atom's nucleus are made up of a neutron (large mass, no charge) and a positron (negligible mass, positive charge) stuck together. Positrons are nearly always attached to neutrons and don't seem as free to move around as electrons.

Electrons, positrons and neutrons are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to sub-atomic particles. There are photons, quarks, neutrinos, mesons, hadrons, muons, gluons, etc. and they have all sorts of properties like mass, charge, spin, and a bunch of other weird things going on.  I'll stop there with the nuclear physics as I'm not a particle physicist and getting any deeper into it just confuses the hell out of me.  ???

Electrons, being negatively charged, are attracted to positively charged things. That's why they move from negative to positive. But we think of voltage as being a positive thing. We talk of such things as +12V and imagine that to be the source of electrical power, with positive volts pushing current towards a negative earth. But for the purpose of analysing basic electrical circuits, it makes no difference from a mathematical point of view if we describe it as a positive charge moving towards a negative pole, or a negative charge moving towards a positive pole. It just comes down to an arbitrary convention.

Cheers,
Cam

Very good Dellertoman - You sound like my grade 11 Chemistry Prof but I believe you should consider whether there are Positrons in the Nucleus of an atom. I do believe you meant to say Protons.

Agree Electrons are considered negatively charged particles in a stable covalent orbit around the positively charged nucleus of an atom where they are falling like the Moon or the ISS in orbit around the Earth and the Earth around the Sun.

Something has to energize the electron into a higher state of charge (EG: Electro-Magnitism) with the same mass  (say a positive lepton) repelling the particle from the nucleus making it briefly a positron when electrons jump to a higher covalent level (Orbit). In doing so emit Gamma radiation (Photons) due to the Anti Matter annihilation process as Positrons are Anti Matter particles.

Only the neutrally charged Neutron with over 18000 times the mass of an electron can split the positively charged Nucleus of a Radio-Active substance such as U235-8 (Plutonium which is man made - Breeder Vs Feeder Reactors) decaying atom. The Nucleus is made up of positive charged Protons and neutrally charged Neutrons. When split, the Nucleus expels Neutrons continuing to accelerate the Fission (The Bomb) leaving + charged protons and - charged electrons, Positrons, Gamma Rays, Photons, Neutrinos ...etc, in other words; Nuclear fall out crap. There are no Electrons or Positrons in the nucleus.

Now that has to be a good definition of Earth Points.

I'm not about to get into Quantum properties of the Electron Vs Positron or Teleportation - Lets just stick to simpler Bohr's Model, Ohms and Faraday's Law.

String Theory (M) did about Ki-Boash our Physics Dept and my agenda back in the late 60's ;o)

I guess talking about the ISS falling around our planet is on topic of Earth points.  :D

Grant: A man of my heart that appreciates Basic Fundamentals - Never take anything for Granted - LOL

You will not learn if you take things for Granted whether or not you agree. BUT!

Of course the ISS is falling towards Earth like and Electron towards the Nucleus of and Atom but because of its Mass and Velocity - ISS just keeps missing Earth - And Heaven knows - ISS may be Negatively Charged where Earth is and it's inhabitants are so Positive to go to warp should simply use Gravitons (Providing we can find one) escape to another universe. And they say Gravity is the weakest force - Fuck Dark Matter and Earth Points :o

Grants, for the price, is my favorite Scotch Whisky with a little peach juice and an ice cube ;o)

This has been a FUN Thread for me.
