2608 is mine and its a 1200 series 1 TS Mirage

your frame number looks all good to me, do you have the V5C showing that, engine number change at DVLA is as easy as a colour change, frame numbers are the identifying quality of the vehicle and the registration stays with that number, and that frame, hence new frames as spare parts are supplied (or were) with no digits stamped between the stars. Sometimes damaged frames are repaired and 40 years later can create problems, the thinking is always one of theft, or fraud, but the former is very rare in real terms for that, the later...........................maybe more so.

your frame does not appear to have been stamped later, so is factory correct, there are several pointers to indicate that, but I cannot reveal here what they are.

your frame would have started out with fixtures for the later BTZ ignition, but as Red points out it looks now to be for the CDI type, suggesting a change that he thought would never take place, the laid forward shock mounts are stock., there might be 6mm tapped about 20mm OD,welded on bosses for the seat trims,

Highly likely that your bike started as a series 1 TS, but maybe not, again, likely that the first 1200cMirage TS was 2602, which needs differentiating form the 1200TS starting 2567 or the 1200T starting 2534 in those short series of numbers they could have been any of the three types, mine is 2608, which doesn't mean that 2607 or 2609 are identical.

your bike did not lean sideways due to careful cornering and the bump stop. I am qualified in roping and sheeting and luck was your friend that day and any other day that you lashed in a similar method, I have had a front strap brake (one of four) but the bike held due to the rear pair, insurance is vital so either of the two pairs of straps should be able to contain the bike, my strap broke due to hitting a not seen huge pothole, this compressed the forks further than the applied loading pre-tension, and on rebound broke the strap, it can happen to you, so I say four straps, all of them "clutched", and either angled towards the centre of the mass for both pair, or to the front if a wheel stop is available on the trailer, I have never used or desire the drive on bumpstop, plenty like them tough and I can see the advantage if you are loading single handed, but once lashed, there will be no function for it.

I only had three straps clem otherwise I would have had 2 on each side so that’s that, I’m more interested in what it started it’s life as and it’s year of manufacture , I’m still trying to get the v5 from the old owner

it would have been late registered then, if shown as 1981, yes you can get free tax and no MOT, (but not until April next year) wait untill you have the V5C and then print off a V112 from DVLA (mot exemption form) and take it with your V5C to a main post office or a smaller one that knows what they are doing ( a lot don't) you can get you V5C easily by printing a V62 (DVLA again) and sending it off with £25, V5C in six weeks if the registered owner does not object, he is given that time to react.

Here's one for you Clem, It's a Spanish 1200 frame and has documents, don't ask me how. It looks like a replacement frame but the number if it ever corresponded to a Laverda could only be from a 750 SF3 if I'm not mistaken. Who knows how and why.

very late twin,
all numbers looking too thin, or not deep enough
first star looks "ghosted"
first of 5 digits not in line
no star after 5 digits,
5 digits look stamped deeper, maybe later.
missing DGM number

what was the question?

No question Clem ha ha! It's got docs and it's supposed to be a 3CL. It's actually a very late frame from what I can see.
Here's a Spanish engine number for your delectation.

I know they aren't Paul but it's just an example of what's out there. Whatever number is on them they will still be used by me. The bike will still be a Laverda but it won't be worth much with those numbers so I'll just keep it for myself.

you just need to put the orange trim on the wheel barrow wheel now, and you would be matchy matchy wheels

On the whole, it doesn't look too bad! Are you planning to open the engine?
There is probably a way to go ...

Thanks Pat!
Head and barrels are off the bike now. This is the one where they had ground all the shims down to below the minimum available size leaving huge valve clearances. The right hand exhaust valve shim had disintegrated. All in all it's not too bad so far though. Carbs were like new.
