fitting exhaust gaskets?

I've worked on 2 750s recently that had double-stacked copper rings. Normal rings, but 2 of them, on top of each other.

Am I missing a trick, or is this just a DPO-error coincidence? I can't see the sense in it, but willing to learn if someone can enlighten.

Original factory exhaust tubes or not?
A bike with a junction tube on the exhaust or not?

The two gasket trick is used when the exhaust roses tend to not clamp down sufficiently.
This will be because of after market exhaust tubes not sealing correctly in the head or the exhaust tube rotating in the head and grinding away at the copper gaskets due to there being no fixed point for the exhaust. The factory "fixed" point is either the under engine junction box or the cross over in front of the engine.

Don't ask me how those very early 750s coped with the exhaust hanging off the clamp into the head and free to vibrate on the rubber mounted rear.

Thanks Paul.

Both bikes have aftermarket exhausts with no crossover or balance pipe bracing.

The spigots at the front of the downpipes seem to be correct size and allow proper clamping.

Neither bike shows leakage at the head joint, but one bike shows a lot of fretting at the down pipes to silencer joints, not doubt due to the 2 point mounting allowing flex at the 'knee' at the downpipe-silencer joint.

Old copper rings get caught in the head and you could easily miss them when rebuilding - and then fit a new one over the top - not a prob really, by the time they're all compressed. I've never had any issues with headers and gaskets and I ran unfettered exhausts from head to muffler or factory 2/1 mount (not bothered to use the SFC one under the sump plate.

The 2 tubes on the 2/1 are linked and cannot rotate independently.

Crikey! If you can find a gasket and seal manufacturer near you for spiral wound gaskets, a bucket full can be had for pennies not pounds.

The guy on Ebay is raking it in!

I've used those on my mirage and for once the headers don't leak or come loose and fall off as they have before ::) ::) Thing is they can be bit t'ik and don't compress as easily as the copper ones thereby putting undue strain on the rose clamp brass nuts when fitting: probably as well to compress them a little first (second time I did it I squeezed them between a couple of thin blocks of hardwood in the vise).

Thick , is whert it is t'ik as a brick , t'ik as fuck , tjust very t'ik

Have always used and still use only the stock type gaskets, never had any problems.  The trick is to nip the clamps up after a couple of heat cycles.  Neglect this, and the system can self-destruct and fall off...

If you have leaks, the fault is rarely to be found at the gasket.

I've found that to be true of all gaskets.

I have loads they cost pennies when bought by the hundred, and are indistinguishable from stock.

Locales are welcome to come and get two or three and temp me with a bottle of English local Ale, if they feel like it, not bothered if they don't. No postal service at present, I am locked in.
