Hi all

My New to me Jota, thanks Andy J!, looks lovely.
But the generator light flashes at low regs, seems to stop flashing above about 4K revs. He is charging ok.
The bike has std coils with a Witt DMC ignition. Is the Witt making the light flash????
Dunno if it?s linked But two wires arnt connected, a yellow which looks like it?s coming from the ignition and a red and green ....  and there is some warming of the cables.
Things made of metal I?m ok with but this electrickery is a different fish all together and much more slippy!! So any help appreciated.

I you got that much coin in the bike, I would suggest you replace the Generator with an Alternator.

It will save you all kinds of crap in the future ;o)

He is charging ok.
What voltage did you measure?
And what variant Jota variant... series 1 or 2?
DMC will not have anything to do with the flashing light, apart from the fact that it draws some current from the system.

Thought so when you referenced Andy J.
OK so the flashing gen light is def not standard, and unlikely to be from the correct reg/rect. Can you identify exactly what is fitted?

Also need to know charging voltage at 3-4000 rpm

Should get a reading of 14.3-14.7 at 3-4,000 rpm after 20 secs if all in order.
Can we put videos on here?
You can upload to the Gallery and link from there.  Better to use YouTube and paste a link here
A photo of the 'flashing light' and the reg/rect would help identification.

a yellow which looks like it?s coming from the ignition and a red and green ....  and there is some warming of the cables.

You need to be more specific about where these are running from/to.  There should be no warming of any cables

Correct, Paul. And finding a three phase reg rect to drive it nigh on impossible.
From description of wires, I'm guessing the third phase has been left disconnected and a single phase reg/rect used  ???

Yep, a GEN light was never fitted by the factory, despite there being a spot in the instruments for it.

The GEN light in your bike is probably one of those cheapo LED voltage indicator things that were all over the place a few years ago. Presumably installed by a previous owner.

Some of them have different colours (eg: green-good, red-bad) or a flash mode to indicate over-voltage or some other issue that's so urgent that your attention needs to be distracted from looking where you're going. You say it's charging at over 13V, so my bet is that the stupid thing has gone out of calibration and is flashing for no reason. Rip it out and chuck it away.

The reason I say chuck it away is that I tried a couple of different versions of those aftermarket gen lights a few years back but they went tits up reasonably quickly. I couldn't find anything that did the job and lasted more than 10 minutes. Then John Wilson (of IIS ignition fame) sent me a little circuit board that actually worked quite well. It mimicked the operation of a normal gen light - a red light that came on with the ignition and went out when the battery was charging. Nice and simple, no multi coloured flashing things. It actually worked very well for a year or two, but it eventually failed too. It must have gone out of calibration because it stays on all the time despite there being no problem with the charging system. You can see it in the picture below. Still on even though the voltage is over 14V.

I ended up fitting the cheap LED voltmeter in the photo below. It's been there a few years now and is still working fine.

"Yep, a GEN light was never fitted by the factory, despite there being a spot in the instruments for it"

Not so with series 1 triples Cam me old buddy, when originally fitted with BTZ ignition and a Bosch reg/rect which enabled the red light, which was wired up, that is from factory, the reg/rect very often failed far too early, although the second one on TOG is still going, after the original failed they were very often replaced with a reg/rect which did not have a wire to feed the red light, Rob did help me get one from Checko, but the low battery charge on TOG turned out to be something else.

so,
series 1's had a working red light when fitted with BTZ
series 11's did not have a working red light

all 750's had a working red light (some were labelled "oil")

Hamish will tell us about CDI triples, I hope.

So with reference to the wires here?s a picture of the area showing the unconnected ones... any thoughts?

Maybe the light flickering on and off is one of the background lights or maybe even the dreaded neutral light has lost the surround in the clock that keeps the light over the jewel.
As Clem mentioned that light isn't connected on a series 2 bike generally there is not even a globe in there.

No Gen light function on mine, only the Neutral, Beam and Flash lights were connected on mine as you can see from the photographs below. Blue/red being the Gen lamp, sealed off, from the Factory
