Front sprocket?

Maitland

Got around to fitting the chain and sprockets on the Mirage (1979) to find the new front / gearbox sprocket is different to the original. This won't go on far enough to fit the locking ring. The original has a taper machined to one side that mates to the output shaft, the replacement doesn't.

Now; am I missing something, have B&C sent one for a deferent model, or have they simply forgotten to machine the taper to the inside? Your thoughts (on the sprockets ;)) so when phoning I can at least sound as if I know what I'm talking about :D

Should be a couple of pictures.

Thanks,

Maitland.

Sure need the taper... won't fit without.

Doesn't need to be as extreme as per original, though.  1/2 hour with a Dremel should set things right if your supplier can't deliver.

Thanks, wanted to be sure before I phoned tomorrow.

Nowt wrong with the chain so far Andy  :D

With my new one I had to emery a few thou of thickness from the lock-washer so it would turn.
Actually I quite like that as it means a very snug fit is attained.
Not as snug as Maitlands though. Personally I would chuck it back to the supplier with some constructive feedback i.e. 'it doesn't fit mate, you need to give me one that fits'.

Maitland said this was from B&C, I'm surprised, have allways had good service from them, they even went as far as making a sprocket for my 750 with the number of teeth I needed to match my ZXR rear by machining out the center of one off a Harley nother type of bike and mating it to a laverda center and I'm sure they only charged me the price of two sprockets.

B&C also made the rear 40t sprocket to fit the GSXR wheel and have made sprockets for the B52 and my Rickman and service has been fine. Mistakes happen, I can live with that, it's how they're put right that counts. We shall see later today.

I was surprised just how 'snug' the fit is, needed to leave the puller on for 24 hrs before it would move, the Honda sprockets just side off.

Maitland, was that Suzuki sprocket steel or aluminium? I'm having the most awful time trying to find a steel 40T GSXR sprocket in the USA. Lots of alloy ones in the US, though. Cannot imagine why for the life of me, maybe for Daytona?

Easy mate.

Go to your local bearing shop and get a asa50 platewheel with 40 teeth. Your friendly machine shop will machine to what you want.

asa50 and 10B-1 have the same gearing dimensions.

If you have a prob and come over to UK I will get you one done to take back with you.

Join in with others to convince Barber that I should do a seminar on chains at the big bike fest coming up. I sell more and more to the USA and the lack of advice for bikers, especially for classic machiones is woeful.

Mmmm, interesting.

Spoke to Chas at B&C this morning, they know of only two types of gearbox sprockets for the Laverda triple, 520 for the 1000s and 630 for some of the 1200s. Both specify flat faced sprockets, no taper machined to fit the shaft. They have sold a number for the Mirage over the years but have never encountered this type before, it can't be just my bike, are people doing as Piet says, spending half an hour with the Dremel (only I don't have one!) to fix it?

He can put me in contact with a couple of places they use for one off items or small batches if I get stuck.

Ken,
the sprocket is alloy, I have only ever used alloy sprockets on my Rickman (160,000 miles) and had no complaints, they lasted just as long as the 'O' ring chains I fitted. If I remember correctly I used to get through 2 (steel) gearbox sprockets to every chain and rear alloy sprocket. (Awaits tutorial on steel/alloy/teeth/size/chain speed, etc,etc ;))

OCT can supply the correct sprockets (that fit) and chainwheels off the shelf.  Rears in steel as well as alloy.

Sent Chas at B&C a picture of the original sprocket late this afternoon, got a reply this evening saying 'miss understood your requirements, don't do anything to the sprocket call me monday'.

Oooo, can't wait  :D

I also have correctly fitting sprockets in stock. No need to have a one off made. What you are buying of B+C is a generic splined 19T sprocket, not a Laverda specific sprocket. Only a small matter of a chamfer but it makes all the differance.

Another obvious port of call that can - and does! - supply the correct sprocket is Sprockets Unlimited.  When I bought a 530 their price with delivery compared favourably to B&C.  Jane (& John) also know Laverda!  ;)

I wouldn't have believed you could have so much grief over a bloody sprocket.

Bought one from Sprockets Unlimited complete with chamfer, but didn't fit. Don't go on far enough, covers the groove for the locking ring by at least 1 mm, much grinding and cursing it is now on. Is it just my bike I wonder?

So just to prove it a couple of pictures (I hope).
