Gearbox neutral switch

You all claim to be experts and you haven't heard of this rubber bung over the Neutral Switch, me either. Had the same experience with the rubber cover over the front brake light switch. I hadn't heard of that till recently. Do I get a concourse point for that? Even after so many years of minutely detecting every tiny Laverda thing new stuff still comes up. Love it.

I had a rubber bung in mine, when new.
It hardened and shrank, probably heat from the collector, and disappeared after about 8,000 miles.
I've never bothered to replace it.

Did yo do that without swarf ending up inside, Chuck? If cases are split it's probably not a bad mod to do anyway - if it means a cheaper easier to obtain part can be fitted it has to be a good thing.
I could take it out of the bike to do it, so no probs with any swarf . From memory I think I used my lathe to drill it out.
I used something similar to this:

I havent had a working neutral light for years on TOG either, the switch is OK, visible wise, and both blocks the threaded hole and does not itself leak, a new switch is needed, because if I ground the wire it lights the lamp, I forget to change it every time the oil is out, sort of dont care anymore, but if I had done a Ron, then I would never be able to start it!

It's one less thing I have to add when rewiring the bike. I reckon the last time I saw a neutral light on my SF would have been about 1974, just after I bought it from the original owner. If your clutch is set up properly, a light tap with the foot and it's in neutral - pretty easy to feel.

Must be something wrong with me, I've got a working neutral light on all of my bikes that were equipped with one. Even thought about retro-fitting one to the AMC box of the Matchless. ;)

Ditto, my TL Pantah has something like 10 warning lights and none worked or in some cases were not even there, including a deployed side stand warning light when no Pantahs ever had a side stand. Mine now has a Cargiva side stand and I found replacement working warning lights as well, one day I might even wire that one up. All the others work thought.

Actually (with a Ron system) if the light was on all the time, you'd always be able to start the bike. The switch would provide a permanent earth for the starter relay so it would mimic the normal starter wiring.

I'm with Piet. I like having a functioning neutral light. With some gearboxes it's handy to confirm that you are in the proper neutral rather than a false one.

Also, I don't like having things that don't work properly. I have an old Datsun 260Z and the clock in the dash doesn't work. I don't actually need or want a clock, but it pisses me off that it doesn't work, so I'll fix it.

My SFC being a US spec model is fitted with a neutral light. The Euro models don't have the instruments so did they have a neutral switch fitted to the gearbox or just a plug for the hole. Marnix???

On the Motodd I like having the neutral light, a bright green LED as that tells me the ignition is on as it no longer has the red gennie light since converting to 3 phase Alt. As the ignuition switch is located down by the engine breather I like a warning sign to tell me I haven't turned off the ignition. Did it once at a overnight rally only to have a dead battery next morning.

That's one good reason to have one Rob. I went with an LED idiot light that reads the output from the alternator - different colours and flash frequencies and dims automatically at night. Mainly fitted for the same reason as your neutral light but I get the benefit of knowing what the alternator is doing. Haven't seen it with a running motor yet!!

All SFCs that I worked on had a switch, except some works racers. Only the ones with ND clocks (all US models and some Elettronicas) had one that was wired.
