Any owners on here from New Jersey? The state will not title or register my 1999 750S Formula because they cant even find Laverda as a manufacturer in their system. Need to know how you got it done. Thanks

How bizarre! Their admin records probably go straight from Lambretta to Maserati (in alpha order)! What's a Laverda? o_O :ROFLMAO:

@jpq so unless a NJ resident weighs in hopefully you'll have a DMV rep who can solve this issue- there should be a provision such as other/special/custom. Good luck!

Already spoke to DMV HQ in Trenton because I figured the lady I dealt with in person was likely incompetent. They told me she was correct, that Laverda is not a recognized brand in the state's system, and about the court process but thats an impossible task. Other/special/custom is not available for this matter because the bike has a 17 digit VIN. No other state does the following I bet. Before they will let you see a judge who could potentially order the DMV to issue title, the court requires that the DMV rule be fulfilled, with notarized documents from the manufacturer in Italy specific to the VIN in question as well as affidavits of three parties who are not friends or family members stating that they saw me take delivery of the bike and see no modifications to it since that point. These are completely impossible hurdles. I told them Laverda is out of business, to which they said they had no solution for me. That's why I was hoping to find someone who experienced a similar problem, and find out what they did to overcome it. My Zane will not be leaving my driveway at this point. Its as good as a paperweight

That is amazingly incompetent lawmaking, to make such an inflexible bureaucratic pile of shit.
I feel angry on your behalf!
Thank you. Yes, in the US, the state of NJ in particular is known as one of the absolute worst in terms of its endless bureaucratic nonsense. I will work diligently to find a solution to this. My Formula deserves to be ridden, and if that means only on a race track... so be it

I used to see people in similar situations trying to register Dirtbikes in the USA. There were various tricks that would be used and then cracked down on. Some would register them in easier states, Vermont was famous for this and transfer them over. Being in Australia, this fascinated me, as we had similar Bureaucratic issues, but nowhere near as circular or loopy as you blokes, maybe try doing some research on Adventure Rider Forum. They have thousands of US members riding all sorts of bikes.BTW, are there no Historic or age-related exemptions available?

There are "those" ways around it, as with Vermont and Montana, but the owner's actual state of residence typically figures it out quickly, fines him thousands of dollars and bans the bike from its roads.... joy

Aprilia customer services maybe able to help you with confirmation of manufacture but how you get round the three affidavits on the taking possession etc is perhaps going to stretch the imagination most.
Whatever, good luck with getting the bike road registered.

I'm in NJ and just last year titled & registered a 750 SF2 which came with a Tennessee title. It's my second Laverda titled in NJ. It has a 5-digit VIN while my 3C has a 4-digit VIN.

I used the DMV office in Newton, NJ

Suggest you try a different NJ MVC office.

To be clear, assuming that you do have a valid title, what state issued it?

With my SF2 I only had a Bill-of-Sale and used a loop hole to get it titled last year. This year I am awaiting a 'Historic' plate. The 'Historic' plate has a one time $44.00 fee and renews every 2 years free of charge.

Bloody hell! Bureaucracy gone completely mad. On paper our registration laws here (Victoria, Australia) look strict and scary, but there wasn't even the blink of an eyelid when I registered my bike, basically built from bits and pieces, a frame (chassis number) bought from a wrecker in about 1983, a set of cases (engine number) given to me in about 1990. I might migrate to NJ and register it there o_O Good luck with it. I share your frustration.

We have them as well. I knew someone who was hassled for months trying to register a BMW car bought in from either Singapore or Hong Kong, don't remember. A lot of bullshit is not going to happen, wint pass ADRs, Oz Fesign Rules, the issue turned out to be wrong coloured blinkers, a couple of hundred Dollars, and all done; they love bullshit.

I think the ' Laverda family' should have put you on the payroll, Q, and followed your lead on style and function

What paperwork do you have for the bike? Did you just buy it? If so, from what state?

jpq I think you and 3C-Wayne are both in NJ so talk to each other. 3C-Wayne knows how to get around the bullshit; let him help you solve the headache.
I use both my Laverdas on the same plate here in California, so if you already have a Lav on an NJ plate, why not go for it? You can only ride one at a time.
Be careful, Dave.

My brother about 25 years ago here in California, was riding his Ducati with plates off another one of his bikes. He forgot to renew the license tags so borrowed the license plate off his Triumph. He was stopped for speeding and once they saw the plate did not match the bike, it was impounded. He was charged with a felony as he was willfully defrauding the state of the registration fees.

Lots of money later (about $12,000, I think) he got his bike back and now has a criminal record. He was able to plead it down to a misdemeanor as he had no prior criminal record.

And yes I have done the same thing and swapped plates among my own bikes, but after this, not anymore.
