Help Needed Please - On road - Maybe Stranded

Thanks again to all. The generator light has stayed off for 250 miles, so fix looks proper.

I have a new problem. The bike is falling apart underneath me!

Quite a strong knock from motor.  Probably left hand side, but not sure. Sound tranfering all over. Slightly Metallic ringing  sound to it. Getting slowly but progressively worse.  If this bike gets to Breganze, it will be a miracle. I love a challenge....

Terry Sage is heading out to Breganze this week with bike (and missus!) in a van, I'll send you a PM with his mobile number, better to have it and not need it....  ;)
Good luck Paul! :D

no he's not he's going with a trailer which is full of two Laverda triples, could take an extra tiddler, as two years ago we did just that with JWC's 200, but it was a struggle, so doubt that option is possible.#

It?ll very likely be the crank nut. Find a competent person to tighten it as tight as f asap.

I second that. Doubt that you have the notorious left hand ball bearing on that one?

Thanks (yet again) chaps.

It appears to be cam related ..  took out spark plugs to relive compression, rotated engine via rear wheel in 3rd gear. Found a strong click/ ding sound (with resonance) at timing that seems linked to closing/ opening phases of a valve?.  Found that by taking off the timing cover and watching the points cam rotation. It sounds like energy is being stored in a spring and then pinging free against a hard stop. Twice per 720 degrees of crank rotation,  Like a metal mouse trap snapping shut.  Very odd.

Sticking valve? If so it would be as well to identify which one and also to ensure there's plenty of oil being sloshed about up there...

Loose cam coupling/timing sprocket?  Allows the cams to jump around independantly under pressure from the valve springs, can be observed with cam covers removed.

Sounds very much like cam flange area. the key doesn't secure the cam to the flange or timing sprocket, it simply locates it - if the press fit of the cam into the flanges becomes loose the key will do nothing to stop the gradual increase in the movement. It will most likely only affect one side, so take off the tappet covers and observe the rocker movement with manual rotation.

I don't think you'll be making it to Breganze under your own steam somehow  :'(

Thank you for explaining that correctly. That is what happened to me ........ sheared the key but it was the flange ...... and it did only affect one side.

It's all over folks! You can cash your bets in.  I'm in bourbon-lancy which is SE of Nevers. Dan's les France.

Down to one cylinder, can't go on as is.  Anyone passing by?
