Hi Guys
this is my first post on the forum. I'm looking at buying a 3cl 1000 but after they sent me some photo's I realised that there was a hole in the right hand side casing just in front of the gear lever, would there be a reason for this or is it damaged?

Hello Norge,
both, yes it is damaged, and, yes there should be a reason for it.

Attached a picture showing the area:

What's the previous owners statement about it ..?

Cheers
Jo

... and out of a sudden a hole was there ...
::)

I've my own experience when previous owners are kind of monosyllabic. Very often there is more which comes to light, which isn't fully explained with "the bike runs well with no issues ..."

Let's wait until one of the experts chip in ...

It does look a bit oddly shaped, but it is the cooling air outlet for the generator's covered area.

Here's mine

Maybe somebody has used a lever against the casting to try and shift the rotor. The fulcrum point could have been on that part of the casing causing it to fracture and break off? There is also the other shiny line/marking which may be the point where they tried to lever away from the bike?

That?s so the hamster can let itself in and out when it needs to go for a pee...

That made me laugh out loud.
Thanks, Andy.

OK, Norge (and the rest of you experts on later Laverdas),
This is the generator cooling exhaust on a CDI Triple (it was originally fitted with Ceriani forks). The inlet (2) has a perforated steel mesh tucked in it, as in the photo's below, taken a couple of minutes ago, of mine. I've owned it since new and, if I could be bothered, I have a Factory Parts List showing it, with the holes as they should be.
Here endeth.

At last, Clem! My knowledge of mine has been useful!

Standard, as Hamish and others have mentioned.
I have seen more than one of these casings with imperfect holes like this, as if there was either a casting flaw or incomplete finishing off.

The mesh fits over the bottom inlet hole.
This is the exhaust vent at the rear.
If you have a vent here it's not original fitment.

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at ease,  I will still go ahead with the purchase of the bike now.  so I will in know doubt be asking a million more questions about the bike.

for give me for not understanding this modification. but what about water getting into the casing would this not short thing out ??

Not really much in there to short unless the insulation is falling off the wiring. Also the spinning rotor will tend to throw excess water away from the alternator.

this is my first Laverda so what is the reasoning behind this mode as not all models have it. to me CDI is ignition to replace points I can see by your response it refers to the generator\alternator  "Help" why does this setup need cooling  and not the others.
