Hole in casing

The first 3C's had no vent at all, then they put one underneath at the front with a little mesh guard. As for the rear vent I have no idea when that was introduced.

When electricity is generated, work is done and heat is produced. In the original, the system does not demand a regulator so heat will be dissipated by these vents.

The later types have a regulator and the heat is produced in it, hence the need for a heat sink, in good airflow and, from the number of cases listed here and on other fora, the regulators occasionally fail, due to overheating, sometimes with potentially dangerous consequences.

The charging system on mine has performed, without problems, for more than forty-four years. It is perfectly adequate for my purposes, and style of riding.

It does not, however, suit those who wish to ride slowly, with their headlights on day and night.
They are better served with one of Red's charging kits.
Other charging upgrades are available.
