Does that mean we’ll get another public holiday now she’s kicked it? Fuck the republic, waste of time and more importantly money that could be spent elsewhere….

Not sure about us but bizarrely our federal government is now suspended for 15 days, not due to rules, just choice!!! I think the states are following suit.................

Pompous prick….. I don’t like him.

Sad news about Lizzie though, yeah yeah, I’ve taken the piss out of her before but she seemed like a good old stick.

The Poms must be sick of hearing about her departure… the media is doing it to death here (pardon pun)
I liked him until I heard he is a keen and senior member of the WEF. Greenies on steroids.

Wow. Just goes to show how much opinions differ among a random selection of folks such as this forum.

I think his WEF membership and his stance on environmental issues are massive points in his favour. Anyone who doesn't support action on climate change mitigation and other environmental issues has their head buried firmly in the sand.

We spend the money on maintaining a Governor-General and all the stuff that goes with it, and for what benefit?
It’s not a waste of time or money for many of us who would like to see us as an independent nation that doesn’t tug its forelock to colonial powers.

There would be buggar all cost to becoming a Republic in basic simple terms. Nobody is talking about a Presidential System. All it needs is zero communication with anyone from Yaralumna, the Governor Generals' home and Britain. Everything stays the same except for that tiny step. If we can remove the ability to appeal to the Privy Council for matters of Law and now have Australias High Court as The top instead of a body of Poms on the other side of the world we can easily remove a family of Germany extract living in Britan from any ceremonial duties attached to us. The powers that the Governor General has would remain the same, hell you could call him The Grand Poobah, Head Koala for all I care, just so it's clear we are our own body and not an extension of another country. The government picks The Governor General and mostly they do alright at that, no full-blown Gangsters were picked as yet, well maybe one and that was an own goal. and I take offence at the suggestion that we cannot continue doing just that. The last time it was put to a vote the waters got mudded by who put THE QUESTION< cunning bit of work from THAT BLOKE who stated we the people would decide and then immediately wacked his massive thumb on the scale. It's so easy to just do the above and I hope it happens soonish. BTW I don't mind any of THE FIRM turning up for a visit, history is well worth a memory to all.

We do need an ICAC with real powers before we become a republic. Someone needs to keep the bastards honest. Not that the GG or the Royals ever did.

We would have been a republic years ago if the royalist Teflon Kid had not manipulated the wording on the referendum such that no one could support a republic in the possible ways he proposed.

I don't understand the people who slate Prince/King Charles off who've never met the guy.

I had detailed discussions with him and I tell you he is totally switched on, perfectly in tune with everything going on in the world and in business. I met Princess Anne 3 years ago and she is scarily switched on - queen material if ever there was one. I served in the Royal Marines with Prince Edward many years ago, ok that was the wrong career move but still a very nice guy. I never met QEII or Phil the Greek (or Andrew) but rather than make simply making disparaging remarks, folks should state from what experience they make their comments. Otherwise it comes over as hot air.

I’ve always had the utmost respect for QE2. Fantastic lady, the only I’ve ever met actually, well,,,, seen from
Less than 10’,,,,on the side of a country road in may of 1971 in rural Langley British Columbia as part of their visit to commemorate the 100th anniversary of BC joining Canada and the overseen area of English royalty. As an 11 yr old, my Parents of English heritage, bro and sis, cousins, some on horses, on the side of the road as they had just pulled off the Trans Canada Hwy towards Fort Langley. The big Roller with 2 police escorts stopped to say hi! It was quite too much for dad who wept afterwards.
The girls in the office told me the news at 11am PDT, and I must admit I had to grit my teeth hard to stop my eyes watering, before telling them I loved the old girl. I actually loved what she represented just as much. I’m sipping a hand pulled cask ESB at my favourite little hole in the wall as I type this .
A part of England passed IMO, never to
Return. She was the best.

In 1966, a then 17-year-old Charles spent two terms at the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria.
He described Timbertop as the happiest time of his whole education and that his love for Australia has continued throughout his whole life. ( sourced from WHO.COM.AU)

Give Charles a break his old mum just died and he is busy consoling/healing a nation(s).
With the death of Queen Elizabeth like many others I feel like I have lost a much valued and loved family member, and the news brought, brings a tear to my eye.

King Charles will do a fine job, his mum made sure of that, I have massive respect for them both.

It's a simple proposition, and if Charles and it will never happen but if he puts a public comment on anything political it would have a huge impact. I just finished watching a 3 part Doco on TV about what happened to Chalies 2. Anyway, Anthony has ruled out any change to Oz for his first term and fair enough, for now.
