Importing Laverda parts from UK

A UK software company I used to work for did lots of business in the US. Whilst sales went through the books, in principle anyone travelling there with software to work on, should pay import tax on the software, even if not being sold. This was the days before large volumes of data could be transferred online, so we took mag tapes, always declared as demonstration data and the value being that of the tape not the contents. Carrying these through customs to avoid the security x-ray, a colleague was asked by the next person in the queue, what he was carrying. Colleague boastfully told him what magnificent software it was and this was the only copy. Traveller asked if it was valuable and was told it was almost irreplaceable and would "cost fucking millions to write again". Customs overheard, tape was impounded for X% of said value and our work was put on hold for a week or so until solicitors could sort it out.

Not long ago, I ordered something fron china (belive it or not... ;) ), the shipping to austria took 2 weeks only. It was something € 160, but the seller did not declare it, he thought it was smart. the customs asked me for the paypal invoice, and leaved it for 9 (nine) weeks at the customs office, without a chance to call or email them.... then they ask me to pay 40% and 2 weeks later it arrived.... reality....

Received some wiring from Auto Electric Supply in the UK this morning.
A nice customs declaration on the package.
I didn't pay anything extra, as with all the packages I receive or send.

There's a French saying that says "the exception confirms the rule". I don't have the feeling that I'm an exception.

Hi, I have checked everything with Motalia and customs authorities. Motalia was correct, they deducted VAT from my invoice - EUR 222,87 + EUR 40,81 for shipping. Customs duty is EUR 9,62, import sales tax is EUR 53,93 and Austrian Post charged EUR 10,– for collecting the fees. So all correct, but unbelievable expensive. Ciao, Gert
