Took the Sprint out today and have a intermittent misfire, new Odyssey battary, charging,I ve ordered some plugs incase, but would it point to the DMC2 ? I went on the motorway for a high rev blast and is fine at high revs 4th gear, seems to happen more on lower revs, though ticks over fine,it did seem to be getting worse on the journey home .

Any pointers please.

Cheers Shaun

Plug caps on tight? Snip a cm off the lead and screw the cap on again.

Odyssey battery???

I am unimpressed with them of late - my 2 year old one is showing all OK, but drops voltage in a heartbeat and struggles to turn over the Jota (admittedly the starter is a bit slow to respond). My 3 year old one has died the death. Won't buy any more of those - think they have gone downhill and/or lost the plot  :(

Stuck a golf cart battery in today and all OK.... (Yuasa YPC33-12 - fits a treat  8) )

An Odyssey battery won't work unless it is backed up by a decent alternator Pete, says as much in the instructions that come with the battery... no good in an early triple unless the alternator is upgraded, will in my experiance last for years on a bike with a decent charging system.
Unlikely to be your new DMC2 causing the problem Shaun, more likely your old wiring.

Hi Keith,

Actually I had it in a "modern'... Maybe because it was left for a while (but was topped up regularly). Not sure they are as good as they used to be though....

Still, at least the bloody great golf cart battery only expects discharge, then charge on a charger - which should be fine on an early CDI triple  :D

Sorry if not been in touch lately - suffered from a slight loss of plot  ::)  Must be getting better though, as I bought a Jota on a whim (good for the soul  8) )

Cheers Pete

Any specific areas to start looking first Keith? from the coils (TEKS) first? Battery area next? Not a favourite of mine I must say! If its ok on tick over, and high revs does that point anywhere?Seems its when revs drop mainly .Just before FOTB too! :-[

Hi, Shaun.

Did you already check for air leaks? A friend of mine just had similar symptoms on his 750 and
it turned out to be a cracked inlet isolation plate. Check with brake cleaner or start pilot spray.

hi Shaun doesn't it shit you now about trouble shooting with the rgs tank covering the plug area, off she comes, hey before you do take it off have a look at the trigger wires and possible oil leaks in the ignition trigger housing?????
Does the DMC use old bosch triggers?
Regards,
M.

Will check Ernesto thanks,

Maurice I mused to quick tank removal!DMC2 optical.

Hi Shaun, here I "copied & paste" a reaction from me on an article from Lothar about "Starting issues - ignition related" (6 may 2012).
I assume your Odyssey  is an AGM battery so read further, maybe the effects are the same on your DMC2.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Before last winter I put an 30Ah AGM battery in my SFC 1000. The total voltage of Absorption Glass Mat batteries can go up to 12,95 ?till 13,1 volts. This is almost a 0,5 volt more that a traditional "wet" lead acid battery.
When running warm the engine and after many times cutting out the ignition (no spark) I tell the story to Gijs van Dijk and he knows that especially the DMC1 units (blue box) stops working above 13,5 volts.

My regulator is OK, but maybe voltage spikes in access of more than the 13,5 volt did stop working the ignition.
A few days later I got a kind of voltage regulator from Gijs wich he got from Uwe Witt and put that between the 12 volt wire and the DMC and gone were my problems! I did a little measurements and saw that the regulator drops the voltage to the powerline of the DMC to 9,95 Volt.

water in the float bowls
which you wil solve at the same time as following long shank's tip,no need to strip the carbs off the bike to clean the bowls and clean the mains/pilots, fiddly to do especially the middle, but with a good stubby screwdriver (not a chcocolate chinese one) it is achieveable

Thanks all ,Clem ,Longshanks will look at this tom ,saw John F yesterday said much the same.An electrical fault would still occur at any revs surely.

Shaun, not in my case. I had a misfire where I seemed to lose the entire ignition for a second only over 4500 RPM. Took a lot of finding but it was the way I had mounted the DMC2. I had the side panel pressing on the main connector and this caused the misfire. Turning the DMC 90 degrees cured it. Probably not your problem at all but beware that a DMC problem can be at a certain RPM.  Andrew

Shaun,

My Jota was misfiring increasingly badly below 4,500 at the Pinkster Rally. I hitched a ride back in Clem's recovery van...

Back at Clem's house it was a very quick and easy job to drop the float bowls off (2 had a little water in them) and unscrew the pilot jets. 2 out off 3 were partially blocked. A squirt of carb cleaner and a blast with airline soon had them cleaned out.

Misfire cured, hoorah... and still managed to arrive home some hours before I expected!

Thanks James,it is around 4500 and sounds a similar prob,ta.
