whatever way you choose to remove the engine, try doing this, as soon as you have unbolted and removed the front triangular engine plates, insert a 10mm steel rod through the engine bolt hole about 150mm longer each end than the motor, this gives you a "handhold", then when you have removed the bolts from the slotted under case mounts and the four gearbox end mounts, move the motor forwards and upwards at the front end and insert another rod through the upper gearbox mounts.

I have found that those two rods are worth a small fortune in terms of easing the whole process, cam cover removed, pri cover removed, inner and outer gearbox cover removed, chain tensioner and plate removed, sump plug out (they are all gonna come off anyway so make it lighter and smaller), I lift the motor out with a helper, nothing more, done and dusted in minutes,

Yep...you were right...it's cracked.  :-[
On the right hand side...a very thin brown line of what appears to be rust between the weld and the down tube!  ::)

Fantastic forum this  (thumbup)

And this is a particularly good thread. I'm not looking at pulling my motor any time soon but have saved this thread for later!

I am amazed how easily the engine went back into the frame. :o :D :o
Engine rested on its LHS with cam cover removed.  The centre stand was already in position.
Frame placed over the engine , two upper rear bolts placed in position and the engine rotated so that the underside bolts and lower rear bolts went into position.
There were two of us of course.  We then lifted it upright onto the centre stand and motor bike jack.
When I remember how I struggled to lift the engine into position myself (30 years ago). >:(
