jota silencers stainless

Hi!

a friend of mine is looking for a complete exhaust system for a Jota in stainless steel, any recommendations where to source them? He wants original aesthetic.

Regards and thank you,
Miguel

I have a bad experience concerning Armour pipes.
I bought some stainless pipes for my SF2. After a few hundred km, the weld of the collet was letting go. Armour's never answered my mail. Unfortunately, Keihan do not do 750 exhausts.

Beware though with stainless, it can be more brittle than mild steel. Stainless collectors have the reputation of breaking on triples due to vibration.

Mainly due to bad fitment, causing stresses in the welds.
Header pipes in wrong position can cause severe stresses on the collector.

I have good experiences with Keihan exhausts.

I have good experiences with Armours also which fitted/sounded fine on my mirage, however, the headers do tend to discolour a bit (though the iron staining is relatively easy to remove periodically as necessary)

I have direct experience of most of the systems available and can recommend only Keihan.

Grant, you mean considering only stainless or overall?

RCGBOB44, I actually have already a set ordered to Malcolm for my 3C, silencers and collector box. He is restoring my 3 original downpipes following his advice.

My colleague is now hesitant what to do, but most probably will take the same option as myself, as I had 3 spare downpipes, I will probably send them to Malcolm too for doing the same operation as with mines.

THE PROBLEM is, that I have 5 downpipes in my boxes... and I am sure that there is a complete set of three, but I don't know how to identify them. One of them has a C engraved, but I haven't seen neither S nor D, are they not marked because they are the same??

Regards,
Miguel

The original downpipes are all numbered at the bottom but the order they are fitted in isn't logical.

yes, they are numbered at the bottom, but only one has a C, the others are numbered but doesn't specify left or right, so maybe they are symmetrical...?

Factory downpipes have serial numbers stamped near the exit, with the last 3 digits being 041, 042 and 040 for left, middle and right pipes as sat on the bike.
I think pipes marked with letters are aftermarket.

Sounds like you have a mix. My original downpipes were stamped D (destra/right), C (centro/centre), S (sinistro/left) on the pipe where it goes into the collector.
They are not interchangeable.

With a practised eye you can tell which pipe is which, looking along the pipe length when resting the top (cylinder head) end on your extended finger.

To be certain, if you clamp the pipes to a cylinder head (no copper gaskets for this) on the bike you will soon see if they are sitting correctly.  The bottom section of each pipe under the crankcase should run straight,  parallel to and level with each other to mate with the collector. They should sit equidistant between the frame tubes too.

As said above, place the downpipes into the collector and place a straight edge such as a spirit level across the downpipe inlets, the inlets should be flat against the straight edge, will be pretty self evident if they are incorrect. With a bit of practice you can work out which is which with the Mk1 eyeball.
Also pretty important that the pipes are evenly fitted to the collector, if not you run the risk of cracking the collector between the inlets. Ask me how I know :'(

Have to say its a lovely system but boy it can be very complicated and time consuming to fit!.........as I've learnt many times and just when you think its all done, you wheel the bike off the Centre stand and clang!!

I'm not sure if there is an easy 1,2,3 step on how to fit it? but things to look out for.

1) Silencers sitting at the same height looking from the rear of the bike.

2) The Centre stand doesn't hit the system when the bikes taken off the stand, usually found after spending hours adjusting and fitting!

3) Tightening the exhaust collar nuts can influence how the down pipes sit horizontally and therefore match with the collector. I learnt this from the forum and made a lot of sense especially when seating new gaskets.

4) Left hand frame rail is supposed to be shaped that way  ::)  (bigthumb)
