Being brown, it could well be 'live', so be careful to avoid contact with any earthed material.

The photo is a bit fuzzy but it looks like it used to be a lug, if so then look for a screw with a thin, slightly oddly shaped brass washer under it.
Alternatively, you could tape it up so it doesn’t touch anything and see what doesn’t work!

I was having a look at this and from the pictures its not very clear and the video doesn't seem to have been uploaded.
On mine there is a brown wire coming off the main loom which goes to the positive terminal of the battery (on mine) however as Red has said you have a DMC ignition as do I but most of your wiring on the connector block seems to have vacated the area meaning it has been wired slightly differently.
Does everything work on the bike electrically?
My advice would be to look up the excellent wiring diagram that might be hiding in the library and compare/follow your bike to that.
As Andy says also look for a tab that could well have broken off at its fixing end.

Steve, next time you have the seat and tank off you might want to check the left hand frame weld. I could be wrong but i think there is a suggestion of dirt in there. Appologies if it's just a shadow . HTH.
Do you have power elsewhere?
Brown or Marrone is one of the main feeds to the fuse box, from the battery, and one of the feeds to the ignition switch via a convoluted route. The other feed to the switch is red.

Ya sooooo funny
This sounds right. No power except across the battery terminals. I think it may just be from the positive terminal of the battery. When I was at the bike yesterday I hadn't tried to switch it on. Only this morning when I went back. (It's stored away from my place.)

You were spot on, along with Andy.
I knew the wire wasn't live, so when I touched it to the positive battery terminal I got power to the ignition, so I knew it was the main feed. (Ged from GCS said try the battery, too.)
When I undid the battery terminal I found the detached ring piece (oo err missus) and all was revealed (oo err missus).

Blimey. Touching a mystery stray wire to the battery positive terminal to see what happens is a risky diagnostic procedure. You were lucky it worked out for you and you didn't let the smoke out of anything.Educated guesswork.
