People buy those because it's fashionable and for a few, they admire high class engineering.I agree, but who ever said motorcycles should make sense? What makes even less sense is modern sports bikes like Ducati Panigale with 200 HP that'll do in excess of 300 kph. They'd barely get above idle speed in normal road use, but there are a lot of people who want them and buy them. I guess the reason is because it's fun.
I reckon if motorcycles hadn't been invented, but someone just now came up with the idea of putting a massively powerful engine between two wheels, they'd be ridiculed for inventing such a ridiculous and dangerous form of transport. The idea would never be allowed on the road.
The same could be said for cars. Building contraptions that can cruise at a couple of hundred km/h with 5 people on board only to spend most of their time in jams with one person aboard or going around at 50 with same person on board is utter stupidity.
A lot more so than a powerful engine between two wheels. And yet millions of the bloody things are built every year.
