If there are speed limits, bet on it there were crashes caused by driving with to high speed or it is to reduce noise for the people living in that area, to reduce the risk of hitting a deer or similar. (Ask Piet, he lives on the country side and experiences the consequences of stupid, egoistic riders every day several times...). Or the road is in bad shape - or what ever. They are not there because someone in an office thinks about how to annoy you, be sure... (even though you might feel annoyed).

If someone rides to fast on a twisty road and crashes into another car, bike or pedestrien, it can ruin not only the live of the person responsible for the accident (and her/his family members lives) but affect the live of other families, too. Freedom comes with responsibility. Laws are there to manage those that don't take responsibility for themselves and others. As said, at least that's the case over here. Do I understand always all the rules or do I like all of them? No. Most of them make sense though, if you know why they are there. And many of them are not there to annoy the perfect rider but to protect the not so perfect one from getting hurt and causing troubles and cost to the community.

Hi Lothar, the example of the bloke walking was not meant as a comparitor, it was purely an example of what can happen in everyday life and the decisions you may or may not make to mitigate that risk.
More importantly it is also an example of my philosophy on life - when your time's up, it's up!! Or to paraphrase a comment earlier on this thread - when your lucks out, say good night......(And before anyone gets fired up, as I previously said, I am conscious of not assisting that fate!)
Anyway, we may have fundamental differences of opinion on a lot of things but it is difficult to include nuance in this type of medium and a personal discussion may reveal a much closer agreement on actual matters, depending on how much alcohol is involved!!🤪
It is a bit like a political discussion.
If you commit a thought to the written word, these days you are instantly branded as extreme right or extreme left whereas I think most people are much more moderate. Of course hard to convey moderation when trying to make a particular point in a sentence or 2!

The latest typical FB post from the Cops. By Highway that road is 2 lanes wide and right in suburbia and very busy, sure you could fudge that 70 limit and I would easily do 80ish there. 126 is stupidly dangerous, especially for a wet behind-the-ears kid. I think the fine is a bit over the top but the rest is ok. My first speeding bust about 45 years back was on a big expressway with an 80kph limit at that spot and I was at 112kph on my RD 250. Probably a $120 fine and nothing else. I learned a big lesson, time and place plus watch my arse more carefully.

About 6:40pm on Wednesday the 6th of March 2024, Police were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the Hume Highway, Warwick Farm as part of Operation Furious, when they detected a white Toyota Corolla travelling at 126km/h in the sign posted 70km/h speed zone.
The 18 year old male driver was issued a $2,794 infringement for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and his NSW P2 provisional licence was immediately suspended for a period of six months. His number plates were seized for a period of three months.

I agree, over a glas of wine or some beer, we would find a consense. Maybe. But maybe not (and that's absolutely OK for me), as I prefer to put a parachute on before I jump off a plane that's flying high and try to survive, others may just call it their fate and jump without one. Or others may choose to remain on the ground, which is even safer. Mostly.

In a perfect world, the 1st precept may work, but only for a minute or two, we all have flaws There are many millions of Military veterans/ANZACs the world over who would be dead if they lived by the 1st precept. 'Do not murder has a different meaning than Do not kill.
