I suppose so yeah, but the damper rod has the weight of the bike and fork spring tension between it and the slider so there's a fair disincentive for it to unscrew. In any case, it's not how Denis Neil's accident happened so I guess that answers that question.It's possible in theory for the bolt to unscrew all the way if the if the damper rod rotates rather than the bolt. Any scenario of the bolt coming unscrewed seems pretty unlikely though, for the reasons you mention.
That was the throttle jamming at WOT, he clutched it and you could hear the motor banging off the rev limiter before impact but of course in angel gear he didn't make the next corner. Being Honda we never found out the cause - software or mechanical.And to top it off a proper Honda team to boot. O yer didn't something similar happen to Casey Stoner a couple of years back on a Suzuka 8hr ride.
