Mesh Screen

How about we have a little poll re-pulling the exhaust and checking the oil strainer and how often it's done? Be honest.

Now that I have a mag drain plug I'm loath to remove the whole mesh assembly - in the past with each oil change requiring removal I never found anything 'of interest' in there anyway.
I've found that the strainer is only of any use immediately after an engine rebuild, mostly gasket goo remnants that have been washed off the insides of the cases are collected. A magnetic sump plug will at least collect the ferrous bits floating around, all else contiues on its merry journey.

The later strainer as used on the 120 engines is far more efficient, but also more prone to blockage as it has a very much finer mesh which will actually catch larger bits of metallic grit.

Mine haven't been out for donkeys years, they're inspected and cleaned at the first oil change after any major engine work... if I remember to.

Quite.
There's certainly more risk getting the exhaust on and off, broken studs for instance, than not looking at that "filter" thing.

I used to over-maintain if anything. Now much more relaxed about it but do keep a record. Mileage based, not time. Saving a lot of planet that way! Haven’t seen that screen in years, but was planning on pulling it oil change after next. Might not be riding that long … I’m not one of your high-mileage folk. Tend to agree with Piet. But I do have a proper filter and would likely check it every few oil changes if I didn’t.

now and then when I can be bothered, same with the oil, once at the beginning of the season and then before any big trip, no records kept, I did it last when I dropped the chain into the bowels, while doing tappets, (well, changing just the one) that was about 5,000k's since.

Tinkering on the 3C today with the exhaust removed. I removed the strainer, just for shit 'n giggles. First time it's been out since 2010 (2011?), but to be honest, it hasn't seen very many miles since. To put it bluntly, it wasn't worth the trouble:

Rummaged through my stash and found a NOS part, far better. ;)

Main reason for the shop session was to finally replace the oil lines to my external filter, I had burnt and perforated a carelessly arranged hose on the exhaust at Spa in 2012. The filter was made redundant so I could ride for the rest of that weekend. While I was at it, the hose unions were replaced with freshly plated items, looking nice and fresh again.

I changed the oil and removed the strainer on my RGS just this week. The last time the strainer was checked was 19,000 miles ago according to my maintenance records. The oil is changed every 1500 miles.

The oil strainer had one tiny piece of rubber on it probably from one of the chain tensioners. Complete waste of time. Only reason I looked is I needed to remove the exhaust system as one of the copper O rings was leaking. My other Laverda's the strainers are checked maybe every 10 years and I never find anything on them.

So I can sleep peacefully knowing I am not the only one who leaves it alone. My confession now, I had a 30-micron accessory cleanable mesh filter fitted for a few years and removed my std mesh filter altogether. I liked that filter but it was really hard to find a good spot for it and getting at it was not fun. After the last engine rebuild including Corrillos and a crank clean I removed that accessory filter and the engine builder, guess who insisted a replace the std mesh filter, I guess they protect the pump if the shit hits the fan. Plus it's such a shit fight pulling and refining my very big exhaust. The filter on the Atlas is so much easier to get at and even easier with Reds magnetic drain plug gadget, that's a must-do mod for any twin.

Yes Vince,

The standard strainer will protect the pump from larger, hard bits and pieces... that shouldn't be there in the first place!

I never bother.
The so called oil strainer is only there to protect the oil pump from large chunks of debris.
Anyways, it is not an oil filter.
Oil filtration is done with a full flow spin on oil filter on my engine.

I bought a RGS project as a present to myself. Its now covered a few thousand miles through a combination of local rides and a few tours around the Uk.
The mesh on the oil strainer was falling apart so, based on a few conversations, I removed the remaining mesh to stop fragments causing engine damage.
I’ve tried to buy a replacement strainer but it doesn’t seem to be available. Prefer not to go down the route of an external screw on oil filter.
I’m about to buy a magnetic sump plug. Any suggestions on how to replace the oil strainer, or how to replace/repair the mesh?
