Modified Ceriani Fork Cap design...any interest or comments (even relevant ones)

I happen to have a 12mm broach so I was curious if there was any interest in a Modified Ceriani style 38mm Fork Cap. The concept would be that instead of a big external hex there would be an internal hex similar to M*rz*cch*.
I'm sure that if you needed the normal Ceriani style they are readily available but for a custom part what do you think they should cost...? Mod Cap.jpg

Clever design- price them similar to OEM and you should get an interest
Ha those hiway robbers at Devel heaven want $63 each for a REPRO Ceriani... these would be less. I have some other projects that need to finish but I thought I'd put this out there. I'll try making a sample in a couple weeks
 
I would buy a set; the external nuts are so easily damaged, I wish I had started to put a T-shirt on them years ago, before any damage happened.
 
How much Bill? What about making some w/ an air bleed screw, and a taller locking nut for the steering stem?
I'll know more after find out how long it takes to make, The advantage to this style is that It can be done on one machine.
Adding the bleed stuff is probably not worth the effort - based on the Marzocchi style, which is less than ideal e.g. spring and ball with screw that doesn't let air past...but open to suggestions..
Steering stem nuts have been on the radar but it's a low demand part.
 
Steering stem nut with a bearing for a fairing support could be worth a run, I would buy one.
I have no issue with the standard Ceriani fork cap. If they are overtightened, which is un-necessary as the seal is an o-ring and the pinch bolt restricts them from loosening, and other than a socket is used, they can easily be damaged on the hex.
 
I was going to say the same. Bevel Heaven does Maz caps with built-in preload adjusters, but no one does Cer ones.
 
Define integrated pre-load adjusters...(not) the ball and spring deal?
I know some of the early ceriani parts had a hole on the side. Do the Marzocchi spring and ball version actually do anything?

A threaded hole through the centre of the cap that allows a threaded stem to pass through the cap and apply pressure to the top of the spring below the cap so that screwing that stem down through the cap from outside exerts pressure on the end of the spring effectively shortening and tensioning the spring.
 
Ah...that makes it incompatible with the internal hex...or correct my thinkin'...

What's done now is either a stack of washers or you cut a spacer to the length that compresses the spring to where the fork sags to 1/3 of travel with you sitting on the bike. It's pretty scary installing the cap with enough spring tension to set sag and avoiding cross-threading the cap.
 
Then the question becomes can the aluminum tensioner threads take that cyclic load? Do people take the current Ceriani cap then drill and tap it?

One consideration is that with conventional low bars as on the SF2 and the "Brevettato" bars on the 3C there is little clearance between the top of the hex cap and the handlebar so there would not be much space for any preload adjuster, lock nut and access with tools.

I think will not be a problem. Which size will the thread be M8 or M10. Static Load is half the wheight of the bike on two fork parts, so a quarter about 1000N incl. rider. How much will be the dynamic part, twice of it ??? No issue for M8 acc. my assumtion, but could also be calculated…

The other question is what is the sense of a preload adjuster on a SF1 or 2? Is it necessary to rise or lower the front of about max. +-10 mm. For better steering angle or more ground clearance???
 
I think you'd be getting into the realms of 'too complicated = too time-consuming = too expensive' to make.

I have made several fork caps for different front ends I've tried (std Marzo, std Ceri, Marzo M1R, Honda VFR Showa 41mm, Suzuki GSX-R Kayaba 41mm, Yamaha OW010 Kayaba USD), but longer than simply 'caps' to enable mounting clipons above the triple clamps, so easy peasy on most of those to cut an M10 thread through the middle and add a preload adjuster.

If I had a stock Marzo or Ceri front end I would choose better aftermarket springs over aftermarket adjustable fork caps. And as pointed out, if running std bars there simply isn't room to make it work without having a very complicated screw mechanism.
