Quite a massive reach,,,,labelling the asking price of a vintage scooter as incessant dictatorship, because some country decides to intervene on another region of the world ( like every other human conflict since early humanoids left south central Africa 75,000 years ago).
High asking prices of a leisure item, is a dictatorship only if told you must purchase it at that price. Free market means you can laugh at that asking price and move on with a large grin on your face.

So what do you think of the Monty replica the fella just put up for sale here? Is he encouraging crooks? In what way would the riding experience be different for any real person who bought it from an original one? Except for the fact that the lower price might enable the buyer to ride it harder and more often.

FGsS, (For Gods Sake ), he's not asking £ 15 000. So he's not a crook.
Go out there and buy an expertly certified SFC for £50 000 only to find out you have a replica, and then we'll discuss it.

Andy Laverton is good guy, he's just being straight and honest with people.
 
If someone wants to market a rare , early Vespa at that price , and someone else is willing to pay that price for it , then that`s fair enough ........ It`s a deal or agreement that exists purely between the two of them , nothing to do with anyone else really .......... If they both end up happy regarding the deal , then that`s fine by me ........
These sort of transactions are hardly likely to become commonplace ........ so probably nothing the average Vespa purchaser needs to lose sleep over ....... unless they have their heart set on a 1948 V1 Series 1 , maybe ......

Probably no more extravagant than someone splashing out on an expensive watch , painting , or any other work of art ......... And at the end of the day , it`s only priced about six or seven times more than a new Honda 125 scooter ....... Bargain ! .........

If you spend £50k without doing due diligence you have only yourself to blame. Or the “expert” who certified it and how often does that happen in real life, not theory, but actual sales? I’m sure that it has been known to occur with a machine that was Made to Deceive, sold by a criminal with intent to defraud. But a blanket statement that all replicas or tribute machines encourage crooks and criminals is a bit extreme.

For rare or expensive cars and bikes that are built on a production platform, a replica built on the same platform using the same parts and components lets regular folks have exactly the same driving experience as their deeper pocketed brethren. And as has been said here before, it’s the riding that matters!

Absolutely, I was just using his gorgeous Monty replica as an example and to make a point about the positive aspects of replicas in general.

So after reading 26 posts in response to my original post, I will say it again "More money than brains", and I will add Vespa still make Vespas.

Just a thought, original Lambretta scooters are much rarer, too late you missed the market, India, et al, is full of the (brand new) 1970s model Lambrettas, and most are 3-wheel utility(Taxi) type vehicles.

Perth official Laverda dealer back in the '70s, Hartley Motorcycles would loan you a 'Lambo' (Lambretta) when your Laverda was in for service or repairs. It was always the same one and only "Bretta", that every Lav owner thrashed the shit out of it, not many Lavs back then.

My first real motorbike was a Suzuki Indy 550 triple, I took it to John Paul for service and a tune-up with a decoking, fuck what did I know I was 18. John Paul showed me how to decoke a 2 stroke, he twisted the throttle to redline revs and held it there for about 3 minutes, it seemed like an eternity but the blue smoke cleared and the pissing and farting stopped and he gave me enthusiastic instruction to " REVA THE SHIT OUTTA IT, NO MORE PROBLEMS, he was right. John Paul knew Benneli, he successfully campaigned the 250 Benneli 2 strokes at Waneroo, I wish Ihad one now
 
Yeah old Paul kept my 250 Ducati running for me. He was a cool guy in the traditional Italian motorcycle dealer. Remember turning up with my brand new SF2. He had a big grin and took it for a ride
 
I went into John Paul scooter shop one day and saw an ad posted on the wall for a 125 Moto Morini Corsaro for sale. I snapped it up knowing the bikes. Toad and Spaz (Ducati club)both had one each. I still regret selling that one.
Did a lap of Wanaroo on it. Hilarious.
 
I copped shit from the Mechanic at Spooners in the old bike area near Central in Sydney for not thrashing my RD 250 2 stroke, he hatted using the Oxy to burn the carbon out of its pipes. It was a sad day when all those original Bike shops left that area, you could spend a day wandering around there and Omadies looking at stuff. There were close to double figures of bike shops in at block, now there is One.
 
Hey Ross, I also had a moto morini 125 corsaro sports in the 70s. My girlfriend brought it from Mortlocks in Hay St and I brought it from her.
Had no idea Spaz had one but have seen Toads.
Actually Toad has the motor from mine. My brother lost the rolling chassis on one of his many moves back then.
Toad still asks me if I could track the rolling chassis down, fat chance after 45 years.
 
Was your girlfriend called Lynly?
If so she still has it although needing a fair bit of work. Loose Bruce asked her if she wanted to sell it to me.

Girlfriend was Sally,
I left it with my brother when I moved to Melbourne in about 78.
That was a big mistake as he lost it. As mentioned Toad has the motor.
