More printed matter ( again )

Fogarty always seemed to have a thing about tyres .........

In post race interviews , even if he had won , when asked how it went , it would be like ... " ok , but the rear started to go off ............ I`ve just looked at Chilli`s .... ( team mate , same brand and probably same compound ) ...... and his was fine ..... " .........

Other favourite Fogarty quotes ........

" Second place is first loser ..... " ............ " SuperSport 600`s ( the support races ) are shopping bikes ... " ............ " I don`t care about the Championship , I just want to win races ..... " .............. " Kocinski is a spoilt little brat , he needs a f*cking good slap ........ " ............ " Chilli`s / Corser`s / Slight`s / Edwards / Kocinski`s ( take your pick ) bike was faster than mine .... " ..............

As for post race interviews ........

In 250 Grand Prix there was ( still is ) a Northern Irish racer called Jeremey McWilliams who would get good results and often end up on the podium ......

In the post race interviews , the Eurosport television guy would ask for the riders opinion in their native tongue ( Spanish / Italian / German or whatever ) , and then " And Now In English " ........ which most riders could manage pretty well .............

Jeremey McWilliams was sat at the table with the other two top finishers giving his verdict on the race in his broad Irish accent , a bit like the Rev Ian Paisley meets Joey Dunlop .........

" Waaalll , ah was ahaardd o` himmm dawnn the straaaight , but he got me gawing inta the corner ........ but thann ah managed ta ahtbraake him again goin` inta the next baaannd ........ " ..........

The Spanish rider sat next to him looks at him and says ....... " And Now In English .... " ......... :) ..............

Mr. Fogarty and Canadian Jon Cornwell had an interesting exchange that has been fairly well documented.

"Canadian motorcycle racer and elite suspension tuner Jon "Corndog" Cornwell is legendary in the Ducati Corse garage for a famous, blunt reality-check he delivered to four-time World Superbike champion Carl "Foggy" Fogarty.

The legendary confrontation during a tense post-race debrief in the 1990's. Carl Fogarty went on a furious tirade, aggressively complaining that he hated absolutely everything about his Ducati racing motorcycle and blaming the machine entirely. After a long, intensely uncomfortable silence fell over the garage. Cornwell—working as an Öhlins suspension technician—squared straight up to Fogarty and told him he simply wasn't riding hard enough.

Instead of erupting into a fight, the infamously fiery Fogarty stared the Canadian down, paused, exhaled, and quietly admitted that Cornwell was absolutely right."

There was a kinda similar story of a " disagreement " with the team concerning `sixties Lotus Formula One driver Jochen Rindt ..........

The Lotus , especially with the new Cosworth DFV engine , was considered to be fast but fragile ...... Colin Chapman`s mantra was " Simplify and add lightness " ........

Jim Clark`s fatal 1968 crash into the forest at Hockenheim during a Formula 2 race was thought to be down to Lotus suspension failure , although no one knows for sure ......

Rindt ( and team mate Graham Hill ) had both suffered crashes at Monza due to suspension failure...... both ending up in the Armco ...... On one occasion Hill had lost control and crashed first , only for Rindt to do the same seconds later just a few feet away .......

There is a photo of Hill looking down at Rindt , who was still sat in his car ........ Rindt`s face covered in blood ....... actually a broken nose , so not quite as bad as it looked , although a track marshall standing nearby lost an eye due to flying debris thrown up in the crash .......

Anyway , for 1969 Rindt was driving the Type 49 , which was an improvement on what had gone before , but even so , he lost control during practice on the far side of the circuit ..... again seemingly due to some sort of suspension failure .........

Rindt eventually made it walking back to the Lotus garage , marching in and shouting to the assembled team ....... " If that ever happens again , I`m going to kill the f*cking lot of you ! .......

The story above from Ian about Fogarty calling every one out reminded me of this ........

Rindt crashed again at Monza ( again ) in 1970 , this time fatally ....... due to either suspension or inboard brake shaft failure ..... but his points lead in the Championship was such that only Jacky Ickx could have beaten him points wise in the remaining rounds ....... but Ickx didn`t manage to do that , so Rindt became Formula One Champion , although he was dead .......

At the end of the season Ickx presented the trophy to Rindt`s widow Nina .......

Later to be Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone was acting as Rindt`s business manager at the time ........ He was spotted walking back to the pits carrying Rindts crash helmet after the fatal crash , so this whole episode must have affected him quite deeply back then ..........

Rindt had the habit of not fastening the lower buckle of his safety harness ....... he was concerned about being able to exit the car swiftly in the event of it catching fire in a crash ..........

The injuries which contributed to his death were thought to be caused by his sliding forward in the car in the collision due to the lower harness not being secured , the upper part of the harness causing the fatal throat injuries ...........

I used to do a bit of painting for my own pleasure when I was young and Rindt was killed halfway through a little portrait of him I was doing. I didn't have the heart to finish it after that. Still have it somewhere I think.
