... can't you check a diode by doing a continuity check in both direction?
Yes, but it doesn't always show up a bad diode and you have to disconnect the diode from the circuit before measuring. The diode test mode on a meter can be done with the diode in circuit and gives you the voltage drop in forward bias, rather than the resistance across the diode.
Diode mode is also handy for diagnosing electronic circuit faults by measuring voltage drop to ground at any point in the circuit.
 
Now that I have a fancy Fluke I'll have to learn how to do complicated stuff like this Cam :) My elec abilities are a bit of a weak point - no probs checking continuity, volts, amps and the like, but would love to improve my understanding of the finer points.
